GM chiarman Bob Lutz discusses Invicta concept, future of platform

It was widely believed that the Buick Invicta concept shown at the Beijing Motor Show would preview the next-generation Buick LaCrosse, and General Motors chairman Bob Lutz confirmed this assumption on the company’s corporate blog today. Lutz also hinted at the future of the Invicta’s platform.
While GM has been very good at “badge engineering” in the past — essentially slapping a different grille and logo on a particular car and selling under several different nameplates — Lutz says this will not be the case with the Invicta’s architecture. The LaCrosse platform will spawn other sedans by “Chevrolet, Saab, Opel/Vauxhall and others,” but GM will go to great lengths to make sure that everything the customer can see will be different.
“Dimensions can change, such as length and width and cowl height,” Lutz said. “Suspensions can be vastly different, changing the character and behavior of the vehicle, depending on brand.”
The majority of these changes will be funded by the savings from using one global platform.
We look forward to the upcoming models as Lutz promises that they will all have “beautiful, compelling designs.”

He’s a “chiarman” all right. Lutz has nothing to say of any value, just blah, blah, blah, and more blah.

Wrong, if it wasn’t for Lutz we’d be driving the same blah **** from 4 years ago.

I’m suprised Lutz didn’t make it a point of saying that no effort will be made to ensure that the new Invicta platform is environmentally friendly.

I like what they’re doing with global platforms, and I feel like it’s one of the biggest changes GM has made that will lead to their salvation. I’ve always felt that the EXACT same vehicle just badged differently was retarded.

The original Dodge and Plymouth Neons were the hands down winners of the badge engineering sweepstakes. Sh*t, they didn’t even change the grill or the tail lights. I’m not even sure if the models without alloy rims had different hubcaps.

Lutz or not I’m still driving the same “blah ****” Olds Delta 88 from 27 years ago. I would like to thank GM for making such a fine product that has lasted so long, and continues to provide me with reliable and fuel efficient transportation within the City and 1000+ mile trips across country.
Gee, where is all the 1981 Toyota Coronas??? Oh they all been junked over a decade ago because Toyotas are JUNK.

Hey Nagin, I bet a Chevette would be cool to have right now! How many MPGs did those get? I’m too young to remember.
The Invicta is nothing but “Blah”! GM design is much better today than it was a decade ago and much can be attributed to Lutz.

My God GM actually gets it. There is hope for the American automobile after all. This is such a nice breath of fresh air after so many years of **** coming from the USA.

Good ****ing grief LLN… do you need an editor? Really… I’m dead serious – I’d gladly volunteer on a part-time basis because not only does nobody on the LLN “staff” (assuming there’s more than one person) ever proofread for grammatical errors, but they don’t even seem to do some basic fact checking. I mean… seriously, even though AB has tons of grammatical errors in their articles, they at least seem to try to proofread for factual accuracy before posting articles…
Rick Wagoner is the Chairman of General Motors…. Bob Lutz is the Vice-Chairman of Global Product Development. How long has this site been running? More than long enough to catch something like that… stupid mistakes like that stick out like a really sore thumb.
ANYWAY…. I’ll never quite understand why people constantly talk **** on Bob Lutz because they really don’t have any substantial reason to do so – outside of any blind hatred towards GM et al. Any way you cut it, GM is making some of the best products in its century’s worth of history… and a lot of it has been thanks to Lutz’s 2002 return to the company. Yes… he’s green-lighted some misses… but there’s nary a single automotive executive who hasn’t given the go-ahead for a flop here and there… and for every flop he approved there’s one or more success that made up for it.
It just doesn’t make any sense… this is a man who has devoted his life to two thing – his country and cars… and we’re going to talk **** on him because we don’t happen to like GM? After serving in the Marines and going to college, he pursued a career in something he loves and has been everywhere, from GM to BMW to Ford to Chrysler and back to GM again… the man is the quintessential American success story and all people do is suck on sour grapes for no good reason.
He’s done things before that I don’t quite agree with and others that I can’t quite understand… but I’m not going to try and lessen the achievements of a man simply because I don’t like the company he works for. Case in point – I absolutely loathe Microsoft, but I’ll give old Bill Gates massive kudos for what he accomplished.

yeah johnny, but at least the dodge and plymouth neons weren’t marketed as separate vehicles with different names. a neon was a ****ing neon no matter which brand you bought it from. i think dodge stratus/chrysler cirrus/plymouth breeze when i think of the ultimate in badge engineering. or chevy cavalier/pontiac sunfire.

Badge engineering alive and well at GM and I don’t see anything any news in this story. Malibu started life as Opel, reincarnated into Saturn and voa-la Malibu. The basic change was body shell, in essence a stamp – the easiest thing to re manufacture. With available computer technology body strength can be calculated without crashing car 10 times. What is he saying going to change?

^^ ummm… yes troll, in your (knowledge-less) world that may be the case… but then again, what’s the point of Mercury and Lincoln? They’re nothing but screwed up botched Fords… at least GM has enough sense to wrap different sheetmetal around their various makes.

Malibu/Aura both share less in parts than Camry/ES. Every large manufacturer shares platfroms the same way. That is how they are able to sell $20,000 vehicles unlike OEM’s like Mercedes and BMW which sell at much higher prices but are able to only have one vehicle/platform.
Now the Coblat/G5 do take it too far but the G5 (available in coupe only) was an error in product planning at GM which the Pontiac dealers demanded to get a smaller coupe in their stable.
Buick may have been an old mans car but by this time in two years the average will be around 50. The Enclave has a really low average age(being bought by families with kids to replace SUV’s) and the LaCrosse will also go younger due to it’s styling. Due to gas prices the Lucerne will continue to lose volume and not have as much efffect on the Buick average age.

^^ Good points, but might I just point out that the Lucerne gets very respectable gas mileage for such a large, full-size car… I mean, it even gets better mpg than a four-pot Camry.
