Ever since the GM Australia launched its new Holden VE Commodore (pictured), rumors began circulating that GM might export the rear-wheel-drive sedan to America as a Pontiac. Some reports suggested the car would be sold as the next Grand Prix, while others indicated it would be renamed G8.
Today, GM confirmed it will bring the Commodore to America as the Pontiac G8. “We are seriously planning to import a lot of Commodore SS sedans as Pontiac G8s,” product development chief Bob Lutz told Australia’s Drive today at the Detroit auto show, adding that the company could sell 50,000 G8s per year. “We are yet to officially announce it,” he said.
The Commodore and G8 ride on GM’s new Zeta rear-wheel-drive platform, which underpins the 2009 Camaro and the next-generation Impala, in addition to several other planned vehicles.

Could this be the new Gran Prix, of Bonneville?
I’m hoping for Gran Prix. If so it opens up the easy naming and styling op the coupe.
Easy enough: Pontiac G8 Sedan and Coupe.

My neighbour has one of these, and they are very popular in NZ. The SS V8 versions get all the press and rightly so. The base versions are just that; 4sp auto and “adequate” V6 engines. Whether these versons are exported will be interesting.

yeah, this is pretty much the new Grand Prix.
and I highly doubt that the G8 coupe would be Pontiac’s performance RWD.
the “pontiac camaro” will have to have alteast an LS2.
(it better…)

Interesting theory.. if Pontiac brings the Commodore/Monaro coupe as the G8 coupe instead of the GTO, wouldn’t that free them up to bring back the Firebird in the GTO’s place?

They better fix the front-end before they arrive at the dealerships!! Its butt-bland ugly!!! Too 90’s. If they don’t fix it, its gonna be like GTO all over again!
If its renamed as G8, then GM said they want to build and sell a large RWD sedan in place of Bonnieville, what will it be called?? G10?? That doesnt sound right…..

Pontiac seems stuck on this Gx thing. Lutz probably thinks it makes it sound more legitimate as a competitor to BMW. It sounds very arbitrary to me, more like a cheap Mazda. But I digress. This is an absolutely shrewd move by GM, and one that affords enthusiasts much to be, um, enthusiastic about. Cheaper, because its made in Australia, far away from the UAW. More credible because it is rear-wheel drive. The RWD platform affords much flexibility in terms of engine choices, as GM has in the CTS shown it can mate both the its 3.6L V6 and LSx-series engines to both manual and automatic gearboxes.
If the front end looks cool enough I would seriously consider this.

I think it’s great news.
And the Commodore V8s are LS1s or LS2s, I forget which.
But either way, they can get a good v8 in there.
I’m actualy kinda excited!

good thing, if you like RWD…. inmy area, RWD= no go , especially in winter, where we get snow, ice, etc.
I see people with Mustangs in Nice Weather, but Winter? rarely do they bring them out of the garage, onto snow, even with snow tires.

neither. the L76 or L98. the L76 is the 6.0L in the current Avalanche / Suburban.
up to 2005 (the last gen… not the one the G8 would be based on) used the LS1.

I hope they dont Pontiac-ify the looks. I rather just get the Australian version exactly with new badging. I liked the Australian version of the GTO better than the US version. For some reason (cost?) Pontiac watered down the body kit on the american version. They sure know how to make cars look stupid.
Advice to Pontiac, Just leave the damn thing alone and bring it.

And each copy will come with a TV and supscription to all summits between US, UK, France, Germany, Russia, Italy, Japan, and Canada! Haha, get it? Yeah, bad joke. But still, good to see that the American market is getting the best of what GM makes. Just call it the Grand Prix, please.

Hmm. an Aussie car with a great chassis, wonderful engine and high quality interior but with rental grade styling. GM has traveled this road previously and it did not lead to a very profitable destination. My solution is simple. Spend all money that would have been devoted to building a separate Pontiac and spend it on styling. The front clip from that Firebird rendering looks great. Touch nothing else.

Too funny. I see German cars broken down everywhere I go, usually when I travel to Cali or the East Coast. I’d hate to pay the repair bills on those things! But this new Pontiac? Man, I am stoked about this car. I really think we are seeing a Revolution here, and if this is the new GM, I am all for it.
We are going to be looking forward to a bunch of competitors abandoning ship if this keeps up. Those pesky Germans and Japanese won’t know what hit them. It’s gonna be D-day all over again pretty soon!
