deantj: You & Lambo seem to suffer from the same inferiority complex because you both have to use insults and profanity to express your opinions instead of intelligent thoughts and comments. Neither I, nor 1c3d0g, said anything about this being "GMs Messiah". All we said is that we like it. And NO, I will never consider the MX-5 the best convertible out there, let alone the best one by Mazda. Thanks anyway--I'll stick with my RX-7 convertible...it's a much better vehicle.

LamborghiniZ: Do you ever tire of your repetitive mantra about vehicles manufactured by non-US companies? I find it amusing that you tirelessly rip on people who actually like domestic vehicles, yet you are just as set in your ways when it comes to YOUR vehicle choices. Why should anyone on this blog consider your points (valid or otherwise) when it's abundantly clear that you will never change your opinion or even consider another viewpoint?

Renton: I already have a Mazda convertible. I don't need two. I prefer the styling of the Sky, so that's my choice. I agree Mazda convertibles are fun to drive, but the styling is bland IMO.

90Z-- Have you ever driven a Miata/MX-5?

They are amazingly fun. Most of that fun comes from careful and meticulous design with a refusal to offer a substandard product. It is the Japanese way.

Kappa twins have bolder styling and that is it. The driver of the car is the only one who can't appreciate the look b/c he is inside the car. The driver must live with the cars dynamic pluses and minuses. GMs decision to offer a unfinshed product id nothing new. Just go back to the Fiero. The only good one was the very last year. Then they cancelled it.

Just look at how many 1st gen Miatas are still on the road. Those cars are built very well.

The folding top on the Kappas is such a joke, I can't believe they let it out of the factory like that.

After one week in each one, I would bet you would choose the Mazda.

autonutt you're right, and the fact remains that the reason GM is behind is because they lack product quality/product innovation, Mazda has had no head start that GM couldn't have had itself.

"Mazda's already moved on to a seamless folding hardtop."

"Well, they got a bit of a headstart."

Oh, most definitely.. Mazda's been building cars a LOT longer than GM, right? Especially cars with folding tops!

LOL come on now.. about half of the American cars built before the Japanese even had an auto industry had folding fabric tops.. you'd think after 100 years they'd figure out how to make the one on the Solstice actually FIT.

90Z, what are you talking about, you're "tired" of the Miata? The new MX-5 is as new of a product as the Sky, yes it has the same name as its predesecors, and yeah it has a long lineage of great cars, but it's an all new car just like the Sky is. What you should consider is how the Sky doesn't drive as nice as the MX-5, how the MX-5 is a crisper handling driving tool, the Sky being a little less sharp, and that's a fact.

I'll take a Sky over the Miata anyday. I prefer the bolder exterior styling, and it's a new product vs. the Miata which I'm really tired of. Continuous improvement works for me. I really don't care about the trunk space issue because this isn't what I'd consider a daily driver anyway and I'd never take it on a road trip--too cramped for long distances.

As for the cupholder complaints, it doesn't surprise me. People love to eat & drink in their vehicles, and if they can't reach/use the cupholder(s), they're going to complain. There are two people in my office that commute over an hour each way, so decent cupholders for them are a must.

The MX-5 looking a lot like the last Miata ISNT a bad thing at all, and the only reason there are "lines" for the Solistice/Sky is its a shocking new product for GM, one that looks pretty good, but people will realize that the MX-5 is actually the better car, and i believe a better looking car, all the automotive publications have already recognized the MX-5 is a far superior driver

Aren't the Kappas selling for MSRP+? The MIata can be had for below sticker. The Fit and FInish are incomparable with the Kappas.

The S2000 is anything but bland, God is in the details; but it is not the outrageous semi-show car look of the Solstice.

Poor fit and finish really starts to get under your skin after the novelty wears off.

Its easy to see why people would choose this car over an mx-5 or s2000 thoose two cars are styled increadibly blandly for a sports car. The styling of the solistice and sky is evocative and agresive the way buyers in this segment want. Hell ill put up with all the things that are wrong with this car for the price they are selling it at.

The way GM developes cars through te consumer is pathetic. Since the Roger Smith era, I have neve seen GM release aproduct that was fully developed.

Just now adding power windows to both?? WTF

Broken Cadillac has it on the money.

Those softtops look like shit when they are up. S2000 and MX-5 have beautiful tight fitting soft tops.

No lugage space at all.

How anyone with 1/2 a brain would pick these two over the MX-5 is beyond me. The S2000 is in another class altogether.

Broken Cadillac has it on the money.

Those softtops look like **** when they are up. S2000 and MX-5 have beautiful tight fitting soft tops.

No lugage space at all.

How anyone with 1/2 a brain would pick these two over the MX-5 is beyond me. The S2000 is in another class altogether.

The wrinking soft top is what kills it for me. Because if you are offended by it like I am, sure you can put it down permantently but plan on taking a long weekend trip alone or wearing the same clothes the whole time because there is only enough trunk space for a toothbrush and shaving kit.

They also seem slapped together with the inconsistant panel gaps but for cheap money, that is something you live with (I sure did with my Caddy although it WASN"T cheap :( )

Well, if you don't like the cars don't buy them.
I heard there is a waiting list for these babies.
I don't see the line at Mazda/Ford.

The new Miata looks exactly like the old Miata.
It must be the Ford genes, since the new Explorer/Expedition looks exactly like the old ones.

It's easy to pick on GM and say they suck, but the effort is outstanding, all things considered. And it's not surprising to see a few things get overlooked, seeing as how the Solstice went from concept to showroom in something like 18 months, on a completely new platform. They chose to get it to market ASAP and work on correcting the flaws as things progressed, and that's a decent strategy. The powertrain problems will be alleviated, fortunately all the automatics are 2007's and thus covered by the 5 year/100k warranty.
And, of course Mazda is going to be light years ahead; How long has the Miata been out? Since 1990 or something. 16 years is a big head start.

Rear diffs and Auto trannies are big problems with these things. Solsticeforum.net is loaded with complaints. Seats are atrocious and rearward visibility is impossible if you don't use your mirors as those stupid humps get in the way of your view. Oh and the soft top doesn't fit properly. Other than that, they are wonderful.

Too bad really.

The Solstice and especially the Sky/Opel GT are styling knockouts when the top is down, but they look downright kit-car quality when the awkward top is put up.. and unlike the Miata and other competitive roadsters you can't do it in one swift motion. Sad to see that before GM even addresses the main weakness of their roadster, Mazda's already moved on to a seamless folding hardtop.

Sorry Joey D, but in today's competitive car market, things like, oh you know, high quality trim materials and good fit and finish actually DO matter, and it's not as if they actually cost the buyer any more to have a good interior: take the mazda MX-5 Miata, a direct competitor to the Solistice/Sky, very similar price, better car overall, and a nice, quality interior. So yes, it can be done, and it does matter, and GM sucks at it. The end.

Good on GM for quickly turning around these fixes. However, shouldn't these flaws have been caught during development? Or did they figure they'd save money by generating hype, and having these 'early adoptors' do the R&D for them?
Second, will these fixes be applied to the vehicles that have already been sold?

The solstice doesn't come standard with power door locks, A/C, or Power Steering. Two reasons: For the "hardcore" autocrosser people who would just attempt to remove those things, and more importantly, to get in below the 20k price point. Which is pretty remarkable, all things considered. The Sky comes with all of those things standard, hence the higher base price.

"GM is adding power door locks to both roadsters"

WTF, it doesn't even come standard with power door locks? What kind of dinosaur thinking was this in the first place? I'm not giving them an phucking praise for what should have been there in the first place.

Sure, they look great but the near non-usable trunk is inexcusable. Mazda does it fantastically but the boys in Detroit can't? Lutz should be frowing on those engineers.

i just got news from a fairly credible source that says as part of the new pontiac performance division, the solstice will have a v8 in 2-3 years.....if this is true then gm is truly heading in the right direction, on all fronts. and "sampson", there are plans for a 2+2 off the solstice platform, supposedly the g4, in coupe or sedan. cannot wait to start seeing these cars!!

These are really sweet excellent job GM. The fast reaction to the negative comments are EXACTLY why GM is so far ahead of FORD and Mopar on sales. They react quickly to what is desired by the buying public.
