Toyota Tundra sales did not increase by 200,000 – they have only increased 75,000 from the previous year (assuming they sell every truck they can build).
Of those 75,000 – more “conquest” sales would have come from Nissan, Dodge and Ford since the GM versions are new and just as good or better.

General Motors, the leader in truck sales, is certainly in a better position than the competition. If sales were down due to quality concerns, this article would mirror that of one on GM cars. Market conditions are poor, that’s all. The trucks are still successful.

And 200,000 Tundra aales would have an impact if all of the sales were being taken from GM. They’re being taken from Nissan and Dodge first, then Ford, GMC, and Chevrolet.

Commodore: I concur. Drove the new Tundra not long ago, and was impressed by how well-put together it seemed. Now, i didn’t do any “truck stuff” in it, and of course they gave me a flawless tester, but I think this is a huge improvement over the last tundra, and can see the Silverado and F150 as discernable shapes, rather than tiny dots in its windshield.

Leozug: i’ve never been impressed by Huntington beach, and you’re not making it look better to me.

“Commodore”, exclude the Tundra sales and things MAY have turned out differently. And I did say “at some level”, not “solely due to”. This isn’t an issue of imports vs. domestics … as I understand it, isn’t this line of trucks selling 30% better than same period a year ago? But if this situation was teetering to begin with (keeping the line going and offering incentives), the Tundra (to some degree) and, more importantly, the downturn in the housing sector pushed things into a “no-go” scenario.

impulsive – Tundra is a VERY VERY small piece of the puzzle of what’s going on in the market. I’d like to consider myself unbiased, so I’m willing to admit that the new Tundra is hundreds of miles better than the old one, however, I still maintain that the domestics do trucks better.

GM has probably been waiting to do this. With their declining truck sales, it’s the perfect opportunity. I beleive GM is trying to move aways from the concept of making vehicles just to keep workers working and the unions happy. Now with a reduced focus on trucks, some of that saved money can go to the development of their passenger cars. It seems like a obvious step.

“Commodore”, at some level competition is to blame (Tundra) as explained by Hargrove. Supposedly 85% of the trucks built at the plant go to the US. But the majority of the slowdown, as he explains, is attributed the housing failure.

LLN already ran this story? The only way this is different is that now they are painting a grim picture of low demand and yadayadayady. Truth is, GM already said they were gonna do this and they are smart to do it so that they don’t get stuck with a bunch of unsold inventory. Also, EVERYONEs pickup sales are low, not just GMs. GM is NOT doing this because of competition… they have none in this segment except the F-150.

As well, even if gas prices drop or stabilize, there would be anxiety over how long they would stay that way. And I agree with jackjimturkey, the “novelty” of owning a pick up for those that don’t actually need one is wearing off.
