GM Daewoo pausing production for up to 45 days

11/13/2008, 10:28 AM

By Andrew Ganz

General Motors’ South Korean GM Daewoo Automotive and Technology company subsidiary said today that it will suspend production for up to 45 days in response to dramatically reduced overseas shipments to the Americas and Europe. GM Daewoo, South Korea’s third largest automaker, is also rumored to be delaying two of its new models by one year to 2010.

The Maeil business paper in Seoul reported today that the automaker will halt production in its three local plants intermittently until March, though the exact number of days the factories will close remains up in the air as the company is evaluating projected overseas demand.

GM Daewoo wouldn’t comment on the two delayed models reported to be pushed back a model year.

Drove by the local Chevy store last night and, not surprisingly, instead of the usual barrage of Silverados and Cadillacs the entire front row was comprised of Aveos. I understand the dealer’s motives, but with a face like that I might have been inclined to back them in.
