NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened a formal investigation into possible fires in General Motors’ new full-size SUV.

The agency is responding to two reports of fires on 2007 model year Chevrolet Tahoe SUVs. Both were said to have occurred while the vehicles were parked in a home garage with the engine turned off. Both reports allege significant property damage, according to NHTSA’s Defect Investigation Summary.

The 2007 model year was the first for GM’s (GM, Fortune 500) re-engineered GMT900 large trucks and SUVs, a family of vehicles that includes the Tahoe, the GMC Yukon, the Cadillac Escalade and the Chevrolet Silverado pickup among others. The 2007 model year went on sale in early 2006.

The investigation involves only the Tahoe and the closely related GMC Yukon. NHTSA estimates the total population of vehicles at about 400,000.

What is the reason for this notice?

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. has decided that a defect relating to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2001-03 3.2CLs, 2000-03 3.2TLs, and 2004 TLs.
Certain operating conditions can result in heat buildup in the transmission second gear set and may lead to gear tooth chipping. In very rare cases, gear breakage can occur. Gear failure could result in transmission lock-up, and a crash could occur without warning.

What should I do when the transmission fails?

Call any authorized Acura dealer and make an appointment to have your vehicle repaired. For vehicles with less than 15,000 miles, the dealer will install an oil jet kit to provide additional lubrication to the gears. For vehicles with more than 15,000 miles, the dealer will inspect the affected gear for heat discoloration, which indicates possible damage. If heat discoloration exists, the dealer will replace the transmission. If heat discoloration is not found, the dealer will install an oil jet kit. This work will be done free of charge. Please plan to leave your vehicle all day to allow the dealer flexibility in scheduling the inspection and installing the oil jet kit. If transmission replacement is needed, the work will take more than one day.

Acura recalls 273,000 TLs due to fire fears

Honda put out two recall notices today that affects some 273,000 2004-2008 Acura TLs. One of the recalls addresses a windshield wiper issue, where a potentially faulty circuit breaker on 129,600 ‘04 and ‘05 TLs could fail, rendering the wipers useless.

The other recall is a bit more compelling. Apparently an issue with high temperatures under the hood can cause the power steering hose to degrade to the point that it could crack and leak fluid onto the catalytic converter. This could result in a fair amount of smoke, or, at worse, a fire.

Neither issue has resulted in a crash or injury, but Acura dealers have been instructed to replace the power steering hose and, in the case of the windshield wiper motor, inspect the unit and replace it if necessary. Naturally, there’s no charge for either recall.

I think I should wait till at least 2015

And I agree, the Camaro V6 will not be quite as quick as a Mustang GT with proper drivers. In a straight line anyway. Throw in some corners and the tables might turn.

Sales, who knows. Time will tell.

Makes you wonder about the Camaro when it has the uber lightweight LS motor in it and it weighs the same as the GT500 with that overweight pig of a motor in the GT500. What will happen when the 5.0 comes out next year with 400/400 and a 400lb advantage?

As for folks thinking the 300hp V6 Camaro is gonna stand a chance against the GT, thats some wishful thinking. The V6 will be down big on torque.

I think the Camaro will have a more advanced chassis, but I don’t think it will mean much in terms of sales, and thats what counts. No use if the Camaro gets cancelled due to lack of development funds.

Excitement has nothing to do with quality and excuse me if Honda and Toyota are making hybrids and having them out on time

As some have mentioned, the Camaro has typically been the better performer. I believe one of the major auto magazines went as far as to say something like “Mustang outsells Camaro and Firebird 2 to 1, although we can’t figure out why” in the conclusion of their comparison test.

I have old articles of a 93 Cobra vs Z28 comparison, and a 94 GT vs. Z28 one. In both the Z28 accelerated faster, braked in shorter distance, higher skidpad, quicker lap time, hell….the Z28 even managed to get more MPG during the test than the Mustang.

And the GT500KR? An $80,000 Mustang that can’t keep up with a $45,000 Corvette. Just because the KR’s price is similar to GT-Rs and Porsches doesn’t mean its a comparable performer.

This isn’t an endorsement for nationalized health care, but that’s another story for a different website.
