I fill it is a crock of shit autonut. The reason why?... Because ower american workers are standing behind a foreign name. Their is a hell of a lot more profit that goes back to Japan as compared to what they pay ower american workforce. Chinese pants, shoes, furniture are not ok. You know what really piss' me off. WHen you sit down with your family for gift time during christmas and realize over 90% of the gifts being opened are made in either Japan, China, or Taiwan. The thing is that we can't even avoid it anymore if we want to. By the way, I think I did read an article in automotive news magazine in 96' were Toyota stated they were going to purchase plants in the US for faster production in the states but mor importantly so the american consumer had more relation to Toyota. As a matter of fact, I am going to research and find that article. As soon as I find it I'll post it for you autonut.

Ensign, what part of what I stated is not accurate? We know how much KGB owns because bastard had to file forms with SEC. Arabs don't have to do that because they are much more sophisticated and own a lot of equity through different investment vehicles. I agree with you, that I don't have precise numbers, but it will not outrages if they do own 30 to 40% or more.
Chinese collected billions of USDs due to trade imbalance. The chances are that 80% of what you are wearing is made in China. That include leaf blower and a rake at Sears. Take a walk down the isle of Walmart and find something NOT made in China. Those USDS are being invested in US companies.

You absolutely wrong when you think that somebody in this world will build a factory for you or me to feel good. Those factories are build for economical advantage and profit only. Yes they will make profit on the cars that US workers will build and sell and buy. The question is not who will benefit more, in auto industry it will remain a question for many years after investing billions, but how good it is for our economy. I don't have exact figures, but I reckon there is about 50-50 split between workers employed by former Big 3 and Toyonda, Nissan, BMW, Benz, Hyundai in US. Would you rather see those Americans without a job? Is that your idea of patriotism? Chinese pants, shoes, furniture are OK, but American manufactured cars with foreign logos is a sin? What a crock of shit!

autonutt - you sarcastically call some of the people in this thread "expect economists", and you are right; some people here are just typing away but have no idea what they are talking about. Your last comment was, however, PURE SPECULATION. The only FACT that you gave was that a Russian tycoon bought himself 5% of GM (smart investment on his part seeing where GM stock is going). Everything else about the Chinese and blah blah was pretty much speculation. Yes, foreigners build factories in America but why do you think they do that? So they can make people feel better about themselves when they buy a car built in America. They reason with themselves and repeat 100 times that a foreign car built in America is just as American as a domestic car built here and eventually they convince themselves. That, however, is simply not true. So what if 5 or 10% of a company like GM is foreign owned? How much of companies like Toyonda is American owned? Much less than GM is the obvious answer. And of those factories that foreign car companies build to win over America's hearts and minds (as well as buying their way into Nascar), how much of the profits of those factories stays in America? Next to none. An infrastructural investment like an assembly factory is a ONE TIME investment.

And before cardesigner5 and 1115 and sunshine "accuse" me of buying cars because I am a patriot (oh, what a God-awful thing to be), I'd like to remind them that here I am not even talking about American vs Japanese cars. I am simply defending the fact that American car companies are the most American of any car company.

Speaking of Silverados, my dealership has stocked WAY too many I think. We have 285 brand new vehicles right now and 130 of those are Silverados. I can understand maybe 75-80 out of 285, but 130? Meanwhile we have five Malibus, two Aveos, and ten Impalas.

aw now why they have to go and do that? now whos gonna work to sell the crap vehicles. i know lets get Wiseassoffice and 1487_GM_SALES to do it. i can totally see them doing at GM commercial. "we at GM care about our employees (cue the firing) and our vehicles compete well within their markets. (cue Uplander VS Odyssey) so come on down and drive a GM because everything else sucks. (cue redneck laughter)

mijician: I don't even wont to get into the sorry state of the american public school system. I'm almost ready to eat top ramen and take my kids back out of the public-school crowd.

Though the public schools in Nebraska were pretty good.

@autonut,
.
Who said anything about a democracy? It is the culture of a people determining much of how a country acts, and in that respect we are raw. The US still values very little in the way of architecture, and other cultural benchmarks. Japan and Germany will pull together to assist competing industries if said industry is in jeopardy versus the US. US automakers have not gotten it right since the sixties. I said before, and will say it again: Maybe the US should not be in the automotive business, at least not in manufacturing in the States, but the trend is changing to manufacturing elsewhere. I wonder how much of GM's lineup is not just an Australian lineup morphed into something to euphemize it is US based? I also believe that new players will dethrone the current players...a Google of sorts that yields, and wields new thinking and management far outpacing the current big three in the US. The American people would most likely embrace such a company with open arms.

Uh-huh GM is controlled by the KGB and Saudis, well probably not more than any other publicly traded company, around 1%. You can love on Toyota all you want but when people wake up and realize that Toyota has checked out on quality I am sure GM will have no problem buying that fancy plant in Texas from them. I bet they'll even be so kind to dispose of those Tundras and Crapmrys for ya.

Autonut - it is true the Tundra is built in Texas, but there is a distinct problem (at least right now) with having them on the market. That 'problem' is the roughly $6,500 that were putting out in dealer and customer cash to get people to buy them, forcing a price war between GM, Toyota, Dodge and Ford.

Also, those people you mentioned own shares of stock in GM, but that's the way we do business in this country. The profits do stay here in this country, reinvested in things like R&D, design, development, etc. Dividends are paid to stock holders, and that's not GMs doing.

I do get a little aggravated every time I see a Tundra in my area. There are no Toyota dealers within an hours drive, and anyone doing honest research would have determined the Sierra/Silverado is a better truck. So the minions travelled a great distance to buy an inferior product, and the GM plant shuts a shift down, putting Americans out of work.

I realize this post is going to have a strong reaction from some of you, but that's the way I see it... So flame away!

Hey F451, a little lesson in history. Us of America is not a young country compare to the rest of world. There is only one democracy older then American - Switzerland.
Let's take them one by one.
France had revolution in 1792 (US in 1776) and wrote it's constitution about the same time. But it became monarchy after that twice and wasn't republic till around 1870.
Germany was reunited in 1992, there was East and West Germany before that. Before reunification of 1992, Germany was monarchy until 1918. Same applies to Austro-Hungarian empire which actually was consuming Balkans and big chunk of central Europe, therefore countries like Czechoslovakia (now Check and Slovak republics), Yugoslavia (there so many countries that I'm loosing count) did not exist.
Italy was formed as a monarchy in its current border in 1861 (100 years after US) and became republic after WWII.
Spain was republic until 1937 and became constitutional monarchy only after gen. Franco death sometime in 1980's.
I can name only one constitutional monarchy which remained intact and that is England since 18th century (actually they sort of been the same since 1640).
There were countries in Middle East and most of the Africa until 80 years ago (demise of Ottoman empire and British and French colonies).

Automotive industry has been back bone of this country for almost 100 years, more then any other country on earth. The earlier automobiles were build in Germany, but it was not the Germany we know today and FYI during WWII their auto industry was completely destroyed.
The future of any industry is usually defined by the market conditions. For the all foreseeable future the auto industry in this country will be very much alive and well, since we have great territory, small density of population (compare to the rest of the world) and ineffective land mass transit. The auto industry of other countries will progress, since the rest of the world is emulating us.

Well wiseassoffice, I hope you own a lot of GM stock. Tundra is build in this country, state of Texas to be precise in a new plant. It took a billion to build dollars that plan and it is added to US industrial capacity in the case of a conflict. That plant can produce military equipment just like GM or other former big 3.
As far as money flying out of the country argument, huge portion of GM stock is owned by Saudis and 5-6% by former KGB officer and Putin's friend Russian oil and auto tycoon. Let me assure you that dividends(profit) do go to him and Saudis and they may spend in their respective countries.
Most of Japanese vehicles sold in US is produced in US, because of cost of dollar. For the past 20 years yen been much more expensive then dollar. If those Tundras are crap and red blooded Americans like yourself will not buy them, then no worries about profits swimming to Japan - there will be none. Then again, those unpatriotic traitors in Texas who sell out and work in Toyota factory will be out of the job.

autonut, What the? Name fits you well.

How exactly was I implying that? Thanks nimrod.

Anyway I'm not new here, I just didn't comment until today when someone pissed me off too much. Frankly the comments here are BS and rarely have nothing to do with post. So I figuired if you can't beat them join them. I am so hating on vanilla Toyota lately and all of their garbage they sell from the economically BS Prius to the Wallruss humping a Dodge Tundra.

It amazes me that people buy those appliance like automobiles that support a whole other country when we have perfectly capable and reliable vehicles built here, managed here, and marketed to us here. Then people whine about the economy, getting back on the point GM is closing plants here because of the Tundra.

I bet a whole bunch of red state owners are buying up those inferior Toyota products and taking a percentage out GM's truck sales, idling plants. Meanwhile the dollars go back to Japan (except for manufacturing made dollars) and the gas and oil to maintain it go to support Saudi Arabia. Wow way to fuck over the US economy. If you gave a crap maybe you would get a Silverado run it on E85 so you can help this country out instead. However those owners will continue to buy lackluster products with "quality" marketed name, just like they blindly buy from Walmart supporting China.

Sure its your right to buy garbage and save a few bucks because you did, but when consumers stop buying the products you sell or make and choose an inferior product from a inferior country I wonder how happy you will be. Oh wait you'll be broke so you can't pay for internet and we'll never hear.

I'm right there with you!

What Americans fail to realize is that the US of A is a young country in relation to the rest of the world. We're kinda like the kid who got the Corvette at sixteen, and doesn't have a clue until we've totaled it. The future of the American vehicle industry has yet to be defined.

By the way, F451, thanks for reminding me - when that song came out almost 40 years ago everyone was down and gloomy about the future of the USA and said the best days were behind us and blah blah gloomy blah ... and they were wrong then, too. Chit cycles up, and chit cycles down, and dats how da chit flows.

Autonut, if that is how the gas price develops then that's why I am holding ut for a Tesla sedan in the mid 30s slated for about 5 or 6 years from now. If gas goes to $4.5 it'll be another $1,500 or so out of my pocket per year which I will unhappily swing because that is far less expensive than buying a new ride that gets 40mpg. However - you give me a new ride that cuts my weekly transport costs by over 90% (like the Tesla) and I'm right there. Until they do that you are better off driving the current guzzler, actually.

Drove my chevy to my shift,
But my shift got set adrift.
And them good old boys were drinkin whiskey and rye
Singin, this'll be the day that I die.

Ricardo we don't live in an ideal world nor ideal market. I keep on pointing the trend not some final mark/point/destination. If 4 years ago (or even less) the price of oil was less then $40 and now it is $90 what the price of oil will be in another 4 years? The fact that it stayed the same for 20 years iis irrelevant because India and China had less cars combined then Oregon. Chinese market is the fastest growing (not largest, most profitable) and it followed by India. There are over 2 billion people living there and they all want to drive something different then donkey and bicycle. This trend will continue. I cant predict if oil price will be $130 or $180 and what taxes will do to the price at the pump, but after California there are a lot of states with not much cheaper gas prices and quite high tax structure.

wiseassoffice, I spent a lot of time on air force and Navy bases and have a lot of officers as acquittances. Not all of them, but I would say a majority own Japanese brand vehicles. They would be offended if someone suggested that for that reason they are less patriotic then you are. They also would not go to the bar, especially the one with the fight, because it is really stupid place to be. Lastly, I'm yet to hear/read/watch military commercial inviting "Dumb American Patriots" into the service. Their time has passed long time ago. In short: shut the fuck up.

With sufficient refinery capacity (not there thanks to the enviro-whacks) $90/barrel translates to a delivered retail price of about $2.40/gallon regular plus fed/state taxes. This means a final price in an ideal market of about $2.80 to $3.00/gallon in an ideal market.

In the real world of the USA, the enviros screw up the potential refinery capacity by prtotesting to save the fleas, and the Oil Giants shut down many existing refineries simultaneously for maintenance coincidentally prior to big holidays to create a "shortage" which they then use you gouge the living daylights out of us all. Add to that the media scare, the myth that we should "preserve fossils fuels" (although no one can say why we should preserve them) and you end up with prices well above a free-market competitive norm.

Still, I'd just like to thank the stupid dipsticks in California for paying far above the natianl average for gas, thus allowing me to pay less. Guess that 9XXXX zipcode means a lot to you.

I would like to see how many trucks will be sold next year or large cars for that matter. Boys open news sites! Have you notice oil over $90/barrel? Do you think Bubba will afford to fill up at $5/gallon and drive 10-12 miles for $5?
Only 3.5 years ago oil broke $40/barrel and gas $2/gallon and everyone blamed either speculators or bad weather. We are in the continuous bad weather climate. Today's oil price will affect pump in less then 2 weeks. Hold to you pants, 'cause they have to contain a lot of shit! Also we need to take lessons from Chinese how to peddle bicycles.
If it makes you feel better Tundras will polluting dealers lots just like GMC/Chevy/Ford. However, the same factory that builds Tundra will churn out Camry (hopefully I4 not V6). And that is where Toyota nails GM/Ford/Chrysler.

GM may as well go ahead and plan a shift shutdown for the plant that makes the Buick LaCrosse Super because, at over $32,000 starting price, those damn things are gonna clog up the Buick lots very very fast, especially since that's priced way over a very badass and far more attractive G8. At 32k-ish pricing my eyes would be on a CTS or Infiniti before I'd get a LaCrosse Super.

..... Girlfriend: "Ricardo, did you get a cool new car?"
..... Ricardo: "Oh yeah baebae ... a LaCrosse SUPER! Only 32 large plus tax!"
..... GF: "A wha .... how mu....????"
..... RH: "Yeah. Cool huh? Got the new Jizzomatic tranny too!"
..... GF: "Ricardo .. remember that guy 'friend' of mine at work? Welllllll......."

BTW JackoffJimTurkey when someone invades your country I am betting you will be crying for the "Dumb American Patriots" to come bail out your lame ass country. That is of course unless you are a part of shit for brains can't get along with your neighbors cause you can't behave axis of evil.

Just because this country voted in a dumb ass for a president doesn't mean we all are. Better watch your mouth President Shit for brains might bomb ya. That is probably why he got voted in anyway. When you walk into a barfight, you want to be hanging with biggest dumb guy that will punch first and ask questions later. That way you can walk away going "wow was he dumb for that" and have denyability.

I think you are forgetting the thousands of Tundras that had their cam break. Or their transmission issues....can't wait until those Tundras have over 100,000 miles on them. We already know what issues await a full sized Chevy, with Toyotas being crap right off the lot I can bet it will only get worse with mileage.

On top of that Toyota admitted selling Camrys with defective V-6 engines the other day in the FREEP. They knew there was a problem yet went to market anyway.

Also GUESS what! No one really wants crappy mid sized cars. We want SUVs we just don't want the mileage you get with a vehicle like that. Hmm how about a plug in SUV. I'm sold.
