GM exec confirms plans for small Hummer H4

04/24/2007, 11:02 AM

By admin

General Motors plans to offer a smaller Hummer model than the current entry-level H3, according to Hummer General Manager Martin Walsh. “It will be another GM platform that will allow us to build a smaller vehicle,” he told GoAuto.

Reports ahead of January’s Detroit auto show suggested GM would unveil a concept version of the H4 at the event, but the vehicle never materialized.

Walsh’s comments are the first official confirmation of a smaller Hummer model. Previously, GM’s Bob Lutz said Hummer “needs some more products,” but did not say what those would be. In early 2006, Lutz admitted Hummer was again considering a rival to the Jeep Wrangler — after scrapping the idea once — but at the time he would not confirm plans for production.

Walsh recently told Reuters the first new Hummer model will arrive in 2009. It’s not clear if he was referring to the H4, or an H3-based pickup.

He said the vehicle would “have unparalleled off-road capabilities [...] like our current Hummers it would be recognizable from a distance.”

His comments to GoAuto about the H4 are very similar — Walsh says the vehicle must have “iconic design” and leading off-road ability.

Hummer is a niche brand that is fulfilling its purpose fine as it is. To expand the lineup is a foolish waste of resources by GM, when they need to be ensuring that the revitalization of brands like Saturn, Cadillac, and Pontiac continue.

i like the h3 and would welcome a smaller h4 no problem. the stupid hippie sect will hate them even if they were a plug in hybrid. the hippies and liberals can judge everybody all of the time but sure do whine when it get tossed back into their faces, it is so friggin 1 sided its unbelieveable.
i think a little wrangler like h4 would be friggin awesome, considering they stretched the wrangler and it looks like an h3 now anyways.
so there will be 2 good american made offroaders, i likey very much.

Idiots. They just lost their top spot to Toyota and they’re still building these dumb trucks that instead of trying to make cars people really want; Well designed, fuel efficient cars.

You contradict yourself. The Hummer H4 will be the most fuel-efficient Hummer yet. The Hummer H3 outsells its H2 sibling by a margin of 3:1. If the trend follows with the H4, then the new vehicle will dramatically improve the fleet average of the brand.

As for Toyota, the Japanese company sells quite a few SUVs under its banner. This does not include the SUVs and other large cars sold under the Lexus banner. Isn’t sauce for the goose also sauce for the gander?

Richard – LOL! Your two thumbs comment reminds me of a great joke… I’ll spare everyone the setup, but the punch line is “This guy!”

Anyway, I’ve always hoped for a competing vehicle to the Wrangler. If you can get past the horrible manufacturing quality of the Jeep, it’s an awesome ride. Had Hummer come out with this H4 sooner, I may not be driving an XTerra Offroad.

It’s very simple logic:
1. A Smaller Hummer = A more normal sized vehicle
2. This will be more practical for more customers
3. Increased sales (Profit!!!)

Mark my words: the first full hybrid from GM will be a 30+MPG Hummer

An H4 sounds like a good idea to me. The smaller the better as long as it can still off road like the H3 can. Shaun1982 sounds like a gay. Let’s be like toyota and not build anything that can go fast or do anything good.

Hey, all you nay sayers…why r u so against Hummer making this smaller one…I bet any money, you all dont like hummer just because you cant afford one. maybe you are fans of other off-roading vehicles that just arent good enough. the jeep wrangler has been pleasing people both young and old for as long as it has existed. if hummer aims to compete with it, that makes them smart. Jeep is a lofty target but Hummer should be able to make it. cant wait for the H4!

I would love to have a hummer with the same open top concept has the four door wrangler…with the demand so high for the jeep I can’t see why GM shouldn’t consider building something like it.

dont think Hummer will get close to the Jeep. not talking off-road-wise, i think theyve been there and beyond with the – admittedly impractical – H1

But the Jeep is a legend, and they die slowly, if ever, and a car-legend that survives 60years+ propably wont croak too soon.

Others have been making great sportscars, but theres not many names that get close to ferrari, porsche or lamborghini…

You guys take it to a level that’s just disgusting. The internet is some sort of sand box you use to anonymously piss in. It’s a joke. None of you would have the courage to talk like this to real people, and you hide behind your monitors like giddy children sneaking into R rated movies.
