Despite calls from billionaire investors Kirk Kerkorian and Jerome York for GM to kill off at least two brands, vice president Mark LaNeve insists it would be a bad move. “In spite of all the great advice we have been getting — and I am sure we will continue to get until we turn our finances around — this is where we stand on the issue,” he said. He cited the turnaround success of Cadillac as a reason why GM shouldn’t kill off Saab or Hummer. “Cadillac had totally lost its identity,” in 2000 he said. But today, “nobody talks about chopping Cadillac.” He also said he feels killing Hummer would be a bad idea. “Hummer doesn’t have just customers; it has zealots,” he said. As for Saab, he said it simply needs to sharpen its image. “It’s fair to say that we haven’t been real tightly focused on what segments we’re going to compete in,” he said of the Saab division. “Everyone knows [Ford's] Volvo stands for safety and no one was sure what Saab stands for. The [Saab] products were just as good, if not better.”

Why kill Hummer and Saab, they are two of the more powerful brands. Saab is an international company and if you consider the tunaroud of Audi (which is now VW’s most profitable brand) perhaps with the right managment, Saab could do the same, the quality is there. Why not throw out Buick or Pontiac, they only overlap the markets established by Chevy and Cadillac. I’d like to see some brands dropped, but GM needs to be careful and look at the long term prospects- in this game image is important- and this is something Toyota does not have.

Buick will not go anywhere. Buick does quite well in China. Pontiac sells close to 500K units a year which makes them in 3rd place for best selling GM brand. You kill Buick and Pontiac do you think those buyers will then buy Chevy’s? Your mistaken. They will become import buyers which then will further erode GM’s market share.
I would sell Hummer and Saab.

GM needs to bring back LaSalle, Oakland, and Oldsmobile.

LaSalle, No. Oakland became Pontiac in 1926. Oldsmobile would be nice, but that is a pipe dream. Maybe some billionaire can buy the rights from GM and startup Oldsmobile again. That would be cool.

Oh, come on nick…the original Corvette was supposed to be a LaSalle. Cadillac could do something funky with a LaSalle subdivision, instead of that silly arts and sciences crap.

I think it was the 1955 LaSalle II Roadster, maybe it just resembled the earliest Corvette.

They need to get rid of Pontiac. They should also spin off Corvette as its own company, like Ferrari. A lot of people want the corvette, but they hate the fact they are buying a Chevy.

As much as Pontiac, Saturn, Buick, Saab, and GMC are stupid and neither you nor I would consider buying one, they just need to drop what will have no chance of recovering. Pontiac gives GM lots of sales, and while I will always fail to understand how or why, it has to be kept if it is helping the company. Saturn shows promise as a Scion-fighter. Saab should be sold off. GMC supposedly gives GM some great profits. And Hummer could do better if it doesn’t limit itself so much as a niche brand but instead expands itself as another Jeep or better yet, become subdivision for GMC (i.e., call itself the GMC Hummer Line of 4X4s). That leaves us with Buick, which ought to be sold off (yes, I said it) or simply folded.

Why have GMC! Whats the point, the sierra is just a silverado, the yukon, a tahoe and the envoy is a trailblazer. And saturn is like the lowest quality peice of **** you can buy. Buick is for old farts. Chevy is to damn comon. Cadillac is way to overrated. Saab has, what, 1 2 maybe 3 cars. And Hummer, all the H1 is is a tahoe, a piece of **** tahoe, c’mon, 50k for a tahoe, and the H3, a trailblazer, 40k for a peice of **** trailblazer, c’mon. My opinion, I think all of em’ should die!

When Saturn first came out in the late 80’s, when they intentionally neglected to promote the fact that they were a division of GM in their advertizing, and before everyone found out they were part of GM…most people thought Saturn was this great small car that was built so well. Its funny how the perception of Saturn did a complete 180 after such a successful product image at the start.

1st off steve post on 2-12 has no idea what vehicle is what. A hummer H1 is its own make the H2 is similar to a Tahoe/Suburban and the H3 is a colorado, no 5cyl. in a Trailblazer. I would like to think if Gm made all the half ton trucks chevys and all the 3/4 and bigger trucks gmc this would save a ton of $$$$. Plus it’d piss ford off by selling more chevys than fords. (the combined 1/2 of gmc and chevy sells more than f150) Also what does Gm build that is better than anything else? Or a better deal? Nothing. And if you worked on Gm vehicle everyday like I do, you would understand they are grasping at straws. Go back to the basics. Make a nice looking car that is easy to use. I hate memory everything that nobody knows how to use! The 2007 Tahoe has around 24 computers on it!!! Why? I don’t know sounds like a waste of money to me. Why did gm build the SSR or the HHR and why is the GTO so ugly! The camero is coming back, but by then it’ll be too late. Those people bought Mustangs, or imports like the 350z. I don’t have any pitty for such a poorly managed corporation.
