GM files C$1.5 million lawsuit against CAW, five members for Canadian blockade

06/11/2008, 4:45 PM

By Drew Johnson

The CAW’s blockade of General Motors’ Oshawa, Ontario headquarters has drawn on now for eight days, and it looks as though the auto giant has had enough. GM of Canada has filed a C$1.5 million ($1.47 million) lawsuit against the CAW and five of its members and is also seeking an injunction to stop the union’s blockade.

The CAW’s blockade of GM’s Canadian headquarters started over a week ago following GM’s announcement to close four truck plants — including the CAW-staffed Oshawa truck plant. GM’s Oshawa facility employs about 2,600 CAW workers, according to Automotive News.

GM’s lawsuit claims the union and five named members “unlawfully blocked and delayed GMC employees and vehicles from entering and exiting the Oshawa facility.”

The members named were unavailable for comment but a large CAW rally is planned for Thursday across the street from GM headquarters.

GM needs to enable “work from home” capabilities for its people.

I went through a 4 month strike once on the management side. It takes great restraint not to just floor it when one of the brothers blocks your way. The verbal abuse is one thing, you can tune it out, but the ones who figure you need an injunction just to go home can go f*ck themselves.

At one time I believe the unions were a great asset to the workers. However, over time they got greedy with salary and benefits, especially with the big three. And now its come to this. They can petition and negotiate all they want but they can’t stop the company from going under. Who do they want to continue making trucks for? To fill empty lots? Nobody’s buying them. Is it GM’s responsibility to keep these people employed indefinitely, even it means losing money? Eventually the bubble bursts. The party’s over.

Can’t we sue the beaners, too? Or does Ford employ all the beaners?

Why would you sue the “beaners”. They’re actually willing to work for much less money which is good for the auto industry.

Now unions want GM to put another car model in that truck plant. GM makes Chevy Impala, Pontiac Grand Prix and Buick Allure (Lacrosse for American market).

Blockade? How juvenile. I say GM management should use an H2 Hummer to get to the headquarters building, and run over anyone who gets in its way. Idiots.
