GM hopes stars will help make ‘emotional connection’

“Marilyn Monroe,” Tiger Woods, Carmen Electra and hip-hoppers Slum Village will star along historic and current General Motors vehicles in GM’s newest television spot, which will debut on CBS’s “Survivor: Panama – Exile Island” on May 11. The new 60-second ad is the second in a series of GM ads themed “Then and Now.” “General Motors cars and trucks are intimately woven into American popular culture” said Bob Kraut, director, GM brand marketing. “The purpose of the ‘Then and Now’ campaign is to tell the story of an energized, confident and transformed GM that is relevant in American society today.” In SAE magazine, Bob Lutz commented on GM’s past glory, and how it might return. “We had ‘the recipe’ then, and we cleaned everybody’s clock,” Lutz said. “And within that recipe was the under standing that automobile buying, whether it makes sense or not, is an emotional decision.”

I’m so sick and tired of GM thinking that they need more marketing with ghetto celebrities instead of just making good looking, good performing cars. If you ran a any sort of business would you asscociate yourself with a group called “Slum Village”?

When all the product is energized and relevant, then maybe they can say this. Bit premature.

Toyota or BMW could have the crappiest commercials in the car industry, but since their products work well, look good (well, in BMW’s case, that is really subjective…), and drive well for their intended targets, they would still sell as well as they do.

This isn’t a very difficult concept: make good cars and people will buy them. What’s so hard to understand about that?

“General Motors cars and trucks are intimately woven into American popular cultureâ€? said Bob Kraut, director, GM brand marketing.”

Bull****, Aside from the Bling Bling crowd and athletes attracted to the Escalade, GM is about as much of a cultural icon these days as Milli Vanilli. The “Then and now” shpeal is a slap in the face to the loyal fans who have bought their products before this supposed renaissance. Horray for another “Road to Redemption” campaign.

“In SAE magazine, Bob Lutz commented on GM’s past glory, and how it might return. “We had ‘the recipe’ then, and we cleaned everybody’s clock,â€? Lutz said.”

Key word here is “MIGHT”.

And movie stars know exactly WHAT about cars? Just because you can pay someone to shill your products, that doesn’t mean you should.

I though GM was on a roll with good product and fewer marketing gimmicks. I guess I was wrong.

#4 – Paul D get’s the ‘Stuff it Putz!’ award for talking back to that old GM blowhard. He’s still wetting his pants for Marlyn Monroe when 80% of GM prospect base either doesn’t know or could care less about some dead drug user.

Then use some blacks with talent that won’t sour like a quart of a year old milk.Pimping was a ghastly visual offence not too long ago.The second death of pimping will be worse. It will induce vomiting after it passes into the bin of deleted fads. There are plenty of intelligent negro class acts that refuse to dry up and die.Use those.A lot of today’s brain dead blind followers are not even aware of black music outside of the criminal genres.(Oh,another weapons charge…yawn).
