General Motors announced today that it will idle two of its plants, including the Chevrolet Corvette assembly plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky, due to reduced demand for its products. GM will idle its Hamtramck, Michigan, plant for one week beginning November 24 and the Bowling Green Assembly Plant for one week beginning December 1.

GM builds the Cadillac DTS and Buick Lucerne in Hamtramck, a Detroit-area factory that will also build the Chevrolet Volt in 2010. The Corvette and the Cadillac XLR are built in Bowling Green. The two factories are among GM’s best-known assembly plants.

The automaker will lay off about 500 employees beginning January 12 at Hamtramck.

Sales of the Lucerne and DTS are down about 32 percent through September. XLR sales are off 26.3 percent and Corvette sales dipped 9.5 percent according to data compiled by Autodata.
