General Motors has integrated its 12 engineering centers and 11 design studios worldwide to bring new vehicles to market faster at lower costs, said GM Vice Chairman Robert Lutz. The automaker will use a single engineering and design budget beginning January 1 to develop all vehicles worldwide, instead of four regional budgets. GM expects to save up to $1 billion to develop its next generation of midsize cars, such as the Chevrolet Malibu , the Saturn Aura, the Saab 9-3 and the Opel Vectra.
