General Motors has announced it will be investing $20 million into its Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas. The funding will go toward new machinery and equipment to ready the plant for production of the 2012 Buick LaCrosse eAssist.

Part of GM’s $2 billion United States investment plan, the $20 million check will ready the Fairfax plant for production of the 2012 Buick LaCrosse eAssist. Unlike the standard sedan, the Buick LaCrosse eAssist uses a mile hybrid system that allows for a highway rating of 37mpg.

“The LaCrosse has been critical to the resurgence of Buick, bringing many new customers to Buick showrooms,” said GM Manufacturing Manager Jim Glynn. “This investment to improve an already strong car will help us continue winning converts to the brand.”

The Fairfax plant first opened in 1987 and currently produces the Buick LaCrosse and Chevrolet Malibu on three shifts. Last year the plant’s 3,900 employees produced 320,000 Malibus and LaCrosses.

Chevrolet recently debuted an eAssist version of the revised 2013 Malibu sedan, so look for the $20 million to also help with the launch of that vehicle.
