Cadillac DTS-L

11/22/2006, 4:06 PM

By admin

General Motors today unveiled a long-wheelbase version of its Cadillac DTS sedan called the DTS-L. Plans for a stretched version of the DTS were first revealed by Leftlane in May when we uncovered a trademark filing for the name DTS-L.

The extended DTS-L will allow Cadillac to compete with Chrysler’s Chrysler 300C Long Wheelbase and the aging Lincoln Town Car. Gallery after the jump…

Why? Really, why? So a few politicians in DC can be chauffeured around?

Hmm. Less than successful execution of the extension from looking at that unusually large gap between the door seam and the rear fender well. Oh well.

Couldn’t they had spent the “big bucks” to tool up a specific rear door? It just screams cheaply done.

why do you say it’s only for a few ‘DC’ politicians? doesn’t bmw and jaguar (and now even lexus) offer ‘long’ versions? why shouldn’t caddy be allowed to try for a slice of the pie? it’s a free market, if they don’t sell the model gets cancelled.

According to GM, the reason for the regular sized door is a ‘feature’ called privacy. You can see in the interior shot that the C pillar blocks off view from the outside, so on-lookers cannot see who is seated. It definately throws off the proportions of the vehicle, although I doubt anyone looks at the DTS as a thing of beauty anyways…

i agree that it’s a less than desireable execution though.

HAHAHAH look how big that C-pillar is! its like a clown car! can you imagine how bad visibility is in that car? if they wanted privacy, they could have added curtains like they do on the Maybach, Rolls Royce, etc…or at least raise the sill line in the back.

F451—you ask why? I say “why not?” It’s a pretty simple task to stretch the existing car, and it doesn’t cost much compared to the cost of designing an entire car, so why not? If it helps them sell a few more cars, go for it. I remember how nearly everyone wrote the Escalade off as ridiculous when it first came out, and obviously, Cadillac was right, and we were all wrong on that one. Maybe they know something about the market that we don’t.

This is a stopgap product, obviously. There will be a new DTS in the next 2-3 years that is rear wheel drive, they’re just throwing this out there in the meantime. Why not? It is a ridiculous execution, but it gives you a choice over the town car/crown vic and the 300c long edition.

ya know whatd be cool? if this car were RWD, well built, and not uglier than Nicole Ritchie’s ass crack. what a horrible idea; at least the 300C LWB has a little class.

I kind of like the large rear panel that gives privacy. But as an entire package, this is obviously a stopgap. We all know that in 2-3 years, it will be redesigned anyways, and to RWD. Which will be fine, as the center tunnel is large enough already for a FWD car!

The DTS is very nice, I love the seats, but I haven’t sat in many luxury vehicles before, so the seats may be “average”. I’d like to see the DTS as the more “luxurious”, larger, softer Cadillac (compared to the STS), yet still have a very capable chassis and engine. Especially with the V-Series! Oh, and with such legroom available in back, shouldn’t reclining seats become the hot item for these vehicles?

Oh, and garbagemotorsco., I’m 24, and I can certainly appreciate Cadillacs. In my 8 years of driving, I know that speeding is not prudent (not worth getting caught, dangerous), so having a comfy car that is reliable is more important. If that is combined with an ample engine (for merging/passing speed), and a capable chassis (emergency maneuvers, clover-leafs), and you got a winner. Which Cadillac seems to be doing lately. I don’t need a sports car for everyday driving.

Oh, and gsh, its interesting how you cite the DTS as having poor sightlines with its large C-pillar, yet then suggest it have curtains. Wouldn’t blocking out the windows like that be a bit worse than large C-pillars?

Why can GM justify an all-new rear door for their low-volume extended STS/SLS for CHINA but not their higher-volume extended DTS-L for AMERICA? This looks like amateur coachbuilding at best, not an in-house effort!

Aging or not, the Town Car looks tons better than this homologation.. and the 300 LWB blows them both away.

I think Stuart is on to something with his observation of the guy in the car. He is looking longingly out the window with a bit of a short bus grin on his face. Add to that the fact that he almost seems to be restrained rather than relaxing, and the car doesn’t seem like a nice place at all. Of course, he could just be demonstrating the only possible sitting position where the privacy pillar actually functions as a genuine feature. Also, the dude isn’t even wearing a tie.

Most importantly, it might just be me, but I’m pretty sure this is a forced perspective trick. That guy is SMALL. They’ve put a small guy in the back of the car to make it look bigger and more luxurious. I think that’s why he looks like he’s being swallowed by a mammoth-sized seat. Clever work GM, but not clever enough.

That doesn’t look good at all. Instead of this why not just redesign the car like all the other current models like the escalade and the new cts?

Shawn, the DTS *was* redesigned with the CTS/STS/Escalade style in mind. Look at the old DeVille it recently replaced. The DTS is butt-ugly because its target market is OLD.
I bet GM can’t wait for them to die off…

deantj (if you are ever going to revisit this thread), I was referring to cloverleaf on-ramps. You know, they go in a circle to put you on the freeway……never mind. I have no idea what you are talking about.

I’m glad they didn’t extend the doors. Too large of doors make it difficult to open in some situations (in a parking lot).

I like the DTS-L. The fact that they expanded the rear portion of the vehicle with the large c-pillar makes it look distinctive from the regular DTS. This is marketing because if you are going to pay more money for the longer version, there needs to be some physical signs that show the difference.

This is in stark contrast to the 300C Long Wheelbase where the length was added in the real and the rear doors were made longer. Looking at the pictures of the 300C Long wheelbase, there is no distinguishable difference between the regular 300C and the long wheelbase version. They look the same.

The fact that Cadillac made the two vehicles look different is a smart strategy to where the average Joe on the street who is somewhat familiar with cars can tell the difference.

I for one are very happy to see that cadillac has come out with a bigger car (DTS-L). I am tired of all the small/midsize cards on the market, finally a large car is back! I am 45 yrs old and owned new cadillac’s since my late 20’s and enjoy having a big car. I persnally feel that cadillac is always being dumped on, cadillacs technology and looks are as good as the foreign cars. I would rather select a cadillac before purchasing a foreign car.
