With its darkest days hopefully behind it, General Motors finally has some positive news to report. The automaker says sales of its Chevrolet Equinox, Cadillac SRX, Buick LaCrosse, and Chevrolet Camaro have been so strong it’s considering boosting production.

That could be good news for some laid-off workers, many of whom might be recalled to help meet increased demand, according to Reuters. Spokesman Tom Wilkinson told the wire service GM knew it would have to increase production after summer inventory levels became unsustainably low, but the four models mentioned significantly surpassed expectations.

GM says it’s currently evaluating the possibility of a second production plant for the Equinox, which is assembled at the CAMI Automotive plant in Ingersoll, Ontario. GM sold 13,157 Equinoxes in June, up 188 percent from the previous generation model.

General Motors exited bankruptcy 39 days ago. The company’s overall sales are down 35 percent in 2009, which is slightly more than the industry-wide average decline of 25 to 30 percent.
