Well with the new rules BMW better start doing a better job on MPG HERE or they will be paying 100′s of millions per year.

On those great high mileage BMW cars over there. What is different about them? From what I can find they are the same vehicles as in the US except for the addition of a 4 cylinder and diesels. Need to do a lot more than that to meet the new CAFE.

If BMW did not car about MPG, they would not be downsizing their engines and using turbos to make more power while being fuel efficient. Also they would not be bringing over their diesels.

BMW has a whole raft of fuel efficient and clean cars waiting in Europe to import should the need arise, and they are all RWD. USA isn’t the only car market in the world carstuff.

LaCalover, you are right about BMW not caring about MPG. They pay millions in fines every year to the US government for not meeting CAFE and selling gas guzzlers.

Yep that is what GM should do. Screw the US and build what they want. All they have to do is charge the customer. Customers will line up everywhere for higher cost(to pay the fines), lower MPG vehicles. All those other manufactures selling high MPG, lower cost vehicles will just miss out on your intelligent strategy.

Jazz, put on Ellington and smell the coffee! Chevy made in America is as much misnomer as Accord made in Japan. Walk onto Chevy lot and take a look at car’s content on the sticker. And even that low number is misleading since parts form Mexico and Canada are considered American (I personally don’t mind Canadians considered American, we sort of share the lingo, but Mexican is disturbing). Impalas are actually manufactured in Canada, all of them. You have as a good of a chance of picking up “US made” item at Walmart as on Chevy lot. GM is struggling for survival, fighting anything is not high on agenda. Lutz and Wagoner need to keep their salaries intact after 100% raise.

Anyway Bob Lutz said this would happen. I guess he got his wish. The problem to me is that I just don’t know what the vision of Chevrolet or Buick is. Pontiac is supposed to be the American BMW fighter. Ok, I’ll let them ride to that one but Buick? The American Volvo fighter?? Chevy?? The volume brand with no identity other than made in America?? If Buick is all comfort and safety then maybe we can agree to forego the RWD. But since they target the well healed/upper middle class then they really need RWD or AWD. Audi & Volvo is FWD and AWD. If that’s they’re target market then they need to offer cross shoppable products.

Victor, I did not have chance to drive G8, but I drove Impala a lot (Avis and Enterprise are full of them). I can tell you that Impala is greatest rent car around (not much of endorsement, but it is nice car). We have no idea what G8 will do, albeit it is good looking automobile. Being that it is Australian does not guarantee high production quality. Will see. I can tell you that FWD IMpala is much better car then the last RWD was.

Bad move GM…FWD increased fuel economy. Just look at how efficient BMW’s are. Heck, look at your own CTS, it’s just as efficient as FWD cars of it’s size and performance levels. The platform is already developed for chrissake, and now you are going to start from scratch to build FWD? C’mon! I am OK with the Impala going on a stretched Delta, but you could have made a great car on a larger RWD platform that you ALREADY HAVE, especially for Buick, and maybe a Caprice for Chevy.

If I were GM I wouldn’t f*ck with Impala at all other than token light and fascia updates. Really, what are they going to gain? It’s a good car with probably a better reputation than 9 out of 10 vehicles that come out of Detroit. It has a very loyal customer base and once the Crown Victoria fades to dust the Impala and the Charger will have the Police Cruiser market pretty much all to themselves. GM has a lot of things to worry about right now. I just don’t think the Impala is one of them.
