General Motors announced just yesterday that it will be boosting its car and crossover production for the rest of 2008, but it seems the Detroit-based automaker failed to mention the bad news that accompanies the good – further truck and SUV plant shutdowns.
GM has already announced that it will shutter the doors of four of its light duty truck plants, but some of those facilities will have to suffer through further shutdowns before the lights are officially turned off for good.
GM’s Fort Wayne, Indiana; Oshawa, Ontario; Silao, Mexico and Shreveport, Louisiana were already slated to shut down for two weeks during July, but GM announced on Tuesday that it will add one more week to their summer shut down.
GM also announced that it will idle its Arlington, Texas and Janesville, Wisconsin full-size SUV plants for two weeks in July.
In addition to the July shutdowns, GM says more downtime is on the way for its full-size truck and SUV plants in 2008. Although no dates have been set, GM’s Fort Wayne and Silao plants will be idled for an additional two weeks while its Arlington facility will be shut down for three weeks, according to Automotive News. The Oshawa and Janesville plants will see longer shutdown times of seven weeks and ten weeks, respectively.
GM says it will make an announcement about the forthcoming shutdowns after the plants reopen in July.
