Ass. Dust: Nope. not on crack.

Other than what Prius was earlier this decade and what Volt is now to the industry, everything else is just a variation on a theme - not next gen in any way. In fact, the industry is so lame at making real progress, companies throw the label "All new" on products with a few extra kinks in their sheet metal.

Most of you guys are two faced losers.

If GM was not talking about future vehicles, you'd bash them for not having a plan.
When they do, you bash them for talking about vehicles we can't drive yet.

Get a life people.

Other than Toyota, GM is the only other major car company driving next-gen automobile development. Honda's fuel-cell program is a vaporware pipe dream, their hybrids are all MILD HYBRIDS that can't run on electric power alone and others with hybrid's (Nissan, Ford, etc) are just recycling Toyota tech. And diesels, while attractive, are no more advanced than today's gas engines.

Left, you seem to be new here?

LLN has reported that the Volt team has already developed the 2nd gen Volt system that will be lighter and less expensive and will come out soon after (in other words not wait four years for the next model cycle) the introduction of the 1rst gen Volt. They have also started working on the 3rd gen which I would guess is a few years after that.

I agree with Need more oil for GM is an idiot. Let the car hit the market 1st, see if hopefully it doesn't deteriorate like many other GM models did that we all forgot about, and then decide on a luxury version or a performance version. How much is the Converj gonna cost? 90K? Being the Volt is already a rip off.

GM. An American disgracement.

I find it amusing that anyone would consider a FWD Accord sedan a "performance" sedan, V6 hybrid or not! The failure of the Accord hybrids probably had more to do with the astronomical prices they charged for relatively modest gains in power and MPG. The Lexus GS and LS hybrids are the only remotely performance-oriented hybrid sedans, and they seem to do well in the marketplace. With Mercedes and Infiniti planning to follow Lexus into the hybrid sedan market in the next year or so, it seems the "performance" hybrid market is about to expand, not decline. Maybe this is where Cadillac should be.. but a CTS hybrid would make a ton more sense than a Converj-V!

GM got "caught with their pants down" plenty enough for GM for way too long, 0-60. I do agree that GM is taking initiative looking forward to a more fertile future, instead hoping to maintain the status quo for more than a decade.

A Performance GEV variant of the VOLT or CONVERJ could easily be a lighter weight car with revised power management software and upgraded suspension. Maybe drop the range batteries or use a smaller battery pack. Easily way to ditch 200-400 pounds.

Electric motors can be more than 500hp powerful. That's about 350-400kw. 1kw = approx. 1.25hp It's not that hard to build a generator to make about 200-250kw which comes to about 250-312.5hp. Then there is the instant 100% from less than one RPM. Plenty enough for a FWD car. A good start for a RWD car.

Handling has not really been a problem for GM lately, if ever. Always just a matter of doing the work. Something they seem very keen on these days.

A Performance GEV would be a strange thing to American car buyers. It would be a US born track car, made to handle and go. Not the strongest drag racer but I would bet a good HP-GEV would do very well at some place like Nurburgring. Sub-eight minute run maybe?

You got to be kidding me! It is very high performance model already! It burns taxes for development, production and incentives (form of tax credit) to sell in the future! How much more performance can you get out of US government?

This is a good idea.
the only reason I can see someone knocking this is if you don't like GM so you will say this is a dumb idea.
For the people that talk about "bringing the car to the market before you start making different models are what not" ALL car companys do that.
I think it would be smart business for a car company to already be working on a second gen car even before the first gen comes out. It's all about being prepared and trying not to get cought with your pants down.

Why would it be an oxymoron? At one time a 4 cylinder or even a V6 was an oxymoron for performance yet today performance vehicles are primarily NOT V8's.

The ricer cars (can I say ricer anymore?) are high performance vehicles based on what used to be called tiny sewing machine motors.

Isn't a performance hybrid an oxymoron? Like the 4-door coupe nonsense, yeesh..... Unless you're a Tesla customer, most hybrids are designed for economy not performance right now.

What's next, a performance Prius? But putting hybid power into already existing performance cars would be a great idea. How much additional power could Corvette or Cadillac achieve? Not to mention pick up trucks. The Silverado is already offering a hybrid option.

How about they put the car on the market before they start talking about performance models of a car that nobody has even seen or driven?

GM. An american mistake.

Funny, Lutz says they can tweak the car for more power and EVERYONE goes off and thinks this is going to be some kind of electric Camaro competitor and needs to have some kind of sports car chassis under it.

However I could see a whole new class of hybrid tuners out there getting the max power out of it instead of max mpg. Revise the programming to get more/faster power out of the battery quickly and this thing would kick. Heck we could see the powertrain put into 32 Chevies and 55 Bel Airs for guilt free cruising.

Good luck with that. But you might need to build a totally new machine to achieve a real high-performance package. The VOLT and CONVERJ are being built on rather mundane platforms. You gotta be real doing this. Just like the CORVETTE is built on a platform that it fundamentally differnt from almost everything else GM makes, a GEV Sportcars needs to be totally it's own animal and not the parts strapped to a Gas car's platform.

Same goals. Different requirements. Build to the purpose and it will not fail.

I'd be holding off any speculation of supposed performance models until the actual production models make it to the showrooms. Bailout Bob will whore himself out for any free marketing the press has to offer; even if what he saying is true or not.
