General Motors’ all-new pickup trucks have been facing tough competition from an equally-new Toyota Tundra, as well as heavily discounted Dodge and Ford models. GM’s heavy duty models, in particular, have seen the biggest drop in sales, due in part to high gas prices, according to the automaker. Now, GM is looking to slow down production at its Pontiac, Mich., plant in order to reduce the automaker’s unsold inventory.
GM currently builds 54 trucks an hour, a figure that the automaker is looking to scale back to 45, according to The Oakland Press. The Pontiac plant has about 3,000 hourly and salaried employees. In order to meet the 17 percent production cut, as many 475 employees could be taken out of the equation.
GM could move some of those workers to its nearby Orion Township, Mich., plant. GM and the United Auto Workers haven’t discussed what to do with the employees.

I personally don’t like the look of the new Chevy. I appear to be in the minority tho in my circles. I think it looks like a lumbering chunk of unfinished body parts. A stark difference from the Tahoe/Suburban which look clean and more upscale. Maybe the truck demographic doesn’t want clean or upscale. I’ve personally owned each of the big 3’s trucks in past years and found them all to be lacking in different areas of quality. At least my Ford and Dodge didn’t have any drivetrain problems. Actually my Dodge had a rear-end replaced under warranty. But the Chevy I had was crap. Interior bits broke almost weekly and when the tranny went south after 50K miles, I traded it. The truck market being what it is, this should not be big news.

This is once again disappointing news for American auto workers in the UAW. Though successful, in addition to much less generous benefits, Toyota pays their workers substantially less than the Detroit 3 which only hurts GM and Ford further.

I hate how much credit Toyota is being given for their truck. Toyota is hurting Nissan and Dodge, NOT Ford and GM. GM significantly reduced rebates. One of the biggest objections I get from customers is regarding why I don’t have a $6,000-$12,000 discount on my truck. The simple answer is: I don’t need one. The product is just better. If the company is hurting right now I can’t think of a better reason why than to say that we’re not giving our trucks away. May not be good for units but it sure is good for profit.

Pauly, Toyota doesn’t pay less, it’s more a factor of Detroit paying way too much for quality of work they produce which only hurts the American economy to say nothing of the US auto industry as a whole.

It is very good of GM to trim production for their trucks. Maybe they will focus more on their cars. The reason why their sales have been disappointing is because they make garbage. I am sick of people complaining how expensive gasoline is in the United States. It is near 8 dollars a gallon in Europe, not 3 and change like in the USA. GM must focus their energy to producing quality cars otherwise they will fall.

Many Chevrolet models have gone a long ways in the past three years, especially the most recent models.
The Chevrolet Silverado and GMC brother are great trucks, the interiors are really nice. I’ve sat and driven in one, and it was a really nice ride.
GM is probably in the biggest danger though, since it’s European markets I don’t believe are doing good (correct me if I’m wrong). Ford’s doing great in it’s European markets, Ford will not be the first to die.
And the reason why so many Americans complain is they travel much longer distances, Sunshine1810. It’s alot less comfortable to drive around in teeny hatchbacks, with little engines. I know alot of people who have a 1 hour commute to and from work, daily. Is it a smart decision? Not really, but I don’t decide where the roads and businesses are placed.

gm shouldnt worry about their trucks. they should worry about their passenger cars. many asian brands are surpassing them in interior quality. my dad chose an 07 accord for his daily commute to work in VA. normally it would take a 1/2 for him to come home but during rush hour,it takes twice as long to get to and from work. he doesnt want a dull ride and interior like the malibu he rented when his sportage was in an accident.

GM is doing the right thing by reducing production rather than producing too many just to give them away to get rid of them. Toyota is the one having to heavily discount a new truck to move it. How successful is that? The problem for GM is that Toyota can afford to keep heavy discounts on it until they obtain their market share and not blink about it. Ford/Dodge had better scale back their capacity as well because none of them can afford a war of price attrition against Toyota.

Over here in Socal where its 3.15 a gallon for 87 octane everyone is feeling the pinch. And the Silverado leads with the best mpg. I was in the market for a fullsize but I think im going to hold out for a midsize. I couldn’t believe it though when my neighbor said his Tacoma double cab 2wd only averages 16mpg might as well just get the V8 silverado it’s about the same mpg.

I don’t see how the Tundra is really a big problem for the Silverado considering the Tundra is carrying bigger rebates right now than the Silverado so that tells me the Silverado is obviously the superior truck. People who are looking for Half ton trucks are the most concerned with gas milage and right now Chevy has everybody beat. Come on, if the Tundra was so great then why the huge incentives already to get them moving. My guess is that big powerful engine in the Tundra doesn’t get the greatest fuel milage. The article also states that Chevy’s losing the most ground in the heavy duty part of the market. Toyota doesn’t offer a 3/4 ton so how can they be affecting Chevy’s heavy duty sales. I belive the Dodge’s with their big rebates and Cummins Diesels are taking away more sales from Chevy’s heavy duty trucks more than anybody else right now.

Toyota is just sacrificing the Tundra in hopes of getting market share in the future. This Tundra got people interested. There is another coming out in only a few years. Dodge is hardly a competitor. Ford and Chevrolet own the market for the HDs. Dodge is trying to make an impression now that they are getting back into the commercial truck market. I think that that’s a part of the $12,000-off dealer discounts I hear on the radio.
Side note: not many people have the foresight to consider reliability or resale value. A $12,000 discount is not just because Dodge likes their customers.
Rompn4x:
If GM used the same dramatic advertising that Toyota uses, I think that our truck sales would be slightly better. I hate to admit it, but Toyota commercials make the Tundra look pretty damn impressive. The stuff their Tundra does isn’t difficult for any other truck to do. It just looks good.

The new Silverados are awesome trucks, and if I was looking for a truck I would probably stop the search there.
However, they do need to trim production. Our back lot has at least 30 of them, with another 20 or so on the front.

Aren’t these trucks also built in Mexico? Maybe GM could save a few bucks by transferring production down there where it’s cheaper. Maybe they could build them in China.
Sure the Tundra is built in Texas, but everyone knows that a GM built in Mexico or China is more desirable and better for the US economy.

That’s a way of measuring how good the trucks are in relation to one another.
If the Titan is 100, The Silverado is 111 and the F-Series is 108
garbage:
is the Tundra built in texas or Assembled in texas? far as I know, toyota has never built a vehicle in the U.S.
Building trucks in china probably wouldn’t be cost-effective

GarbageMoCo, the Tundra is assembled in Texas with a majority of Imported parts. And you are correct, the very few in relation GM trucks assembled out of country are still better for the economy since they use a majority of Domestic parts. I’m impressed, you get an A today!

I still don’t really know what you mean by “how good the trucks are in relation to one another”… Where do you get those figures?
The new Silverado surpases the F-150, as I’ve driven both I can come to my opinion. I say that though because:
-The Silverado has a nicer interior
-The Silverado has a better ride
-The Silverado was easier to manuever, and felt more stable.
But I’m comparing the current generation Ford F-150 to the new Chevrolet Silverado, which a lot of things like the exterior, capabilities and performance aren’t as good in the Silverado. The last generation Silverado? Don’t even get me started, I didn’t like one single thing about the last generation compared to the F-150.
Regardless I can’t quite post numbers on how good the cars are… Please explain where you get your numbers from.

jackjimturkey’s list makes no sense. First I am assuming all the models are the most current generation. Both the Tundra and Silverado just came out in 2007, so how in the world can “long lasting” be determined? I hope any truck or car would last more than 12 months!
If it is using the old Silverado and Tundra in the test, then it is outdated and it is nothing more than garbage.

NO LLN! GM’s Heavy Duty models have been selling so poorly because when spec’ed, 95% of them look hideous and disproportionate, like they jacked up a 1500 and beefed up the hood. Left the wheels the same, left the body essentially the same, only make it look half retarded. Ford has it right keeping the super duty and F150 separate designs. I drive a Silverado so dont give me any crap about ford loyalty or some garbage. The new Silverado 1500’s are perfect, but the HD models are god awful and lacking when compared to Super Duty, Ram HD, and even the Silverado Classic HD models. When i would rather buy a 2006 HD over a 2007 (regardless of price), something isnt right.

Jjay. The numbers came from my analysis of the trucks. It’s a historical analysis of the Big 3, with the Other Two being based on their much-shorter histories. No real way to put the numbers in concrete terms, other than how much sense it makes to buy one truck versus another.
sharpie the “long lasting” comment and the fine print are from Chevy TV commercials.
Just wish they had a medium-sized i5 truck
