GM prices 2007 Saturn Sky Red Line

06/23/2006, 2:43 PM

By admin

Today, Saturn announced that the 2007 Sky Red Line will be available this fall at a starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $27,895 (including destination charges). Retailers are now taking orders for the turbocharged variant of the Sky roadster. The Sky Red Line features the 2.0L Ecotec Turbo engine, equipped with direct injection technology. It produces 260 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque, making it General Motors’ highest specific output engine ever at 2.1 horsepower per cubic inch of displacement. On Wednesday, GM announced the Pontiac Solstice GXP would start at $25,995.

I hope Saturn really pushes this RedLine.. line. They are a great idea and they really need more recognition. Drop the minivan commercials and show me a Vue Redline. Itll give those who wish they could have a V70R something to start with.

i wonder what the “Market adjustment” will be…its a great looking car. easily my favorite product from GM in a looooooong time and actaully makes me consider buying a Saturn. But that seems kinda pricey for a Saturn. Thats getting into 350Z, RX8 territory. im sure after the dealers put there markup on it, the car is will be into STI/Evo turf and i just dont think the car can compete. for the sake of GM i hope its a great success

If the interior is luxurious, the price ain’t bad. I really like the amount of hp they got out of the engine. And if the car is light and handles well, this car would be a fun car to bring to an autocross event.

but ya gotta remember this is also a chassie that was devloped for a 20,000 car. and the interior is prob the same as the 23,000 base car plus some chrome accents here or there. im sure its a nice car but 27+ is alot of money to ask for a car that only seats two and no trunk space at all. i really hope it does well but i jsut think its to much to ask

Hot! I must admit I am really suprised GM has started things rolling over at Saturn… It had become such a dog of a company…. Now with Opel’s help (THANK GOD!) maybe now Saturn can become a viable alternative for me to check out when I go to shop for a car coming up sooN!

I got a question has anyone actually seen a Sky with an ADM sticker on it? I know lots of people have talked about it but I want to know if someone has seen it and taken a picture of it.

ADM = Additional Dealer Mark-up (I’m Guessing)

I think in the industry there is another name for ADM and that is AMV = Adjusted Market Value sometimes called a bump sticker.

aaaah ok i see what you mean. I havnt been into a Saturn dealer yet to check one of these out. though there is one 2miles from my house. i will try to get there this weekend sometime. i know the Soltice is/was getting marketed up around 3k-5k at some local dealers.

The SaturnFans website [http://www.saturnfans.com/Cars/SKY/2007/chargingmsrp.shtml] has been compiling a list of dealers selling the SKY at sticker with some promising results. This information is based on actual consumer purchases and feedback.

Let’s hope this “watchdog” approach will keep the dealers honest about sticking with Saturn’s stickers.

Yeah ADM or AVM mean the same thing. Sometimes a dealer will put on a bunch of accesories and charge say 200 plus percent mark up on the accesories as another way to do ADM without actually having an ADM sticker.

I think everyone is just asuming the saturn will be marked up by dealers because it is in short demand but no one has seen widespread mark ups yet.

You lose goodwill with the buying public very quickly if you price gouge them. During the fuel strikes in Great Britain one gas station quadrupled its prices. WHen the gas strikes ended no one went back to that gas station and it went out of business. Repeat custom is the best way to make money, not short term profiteering.

Last I checked, Mazda doesn’t have a 260 hp 2-door roadster. Don’t get me wrong, I love Mazdas. I’m keeping my Protege5 as my winter car. And I’m well aware of the RX-8 and the Mazdaspeed 6 and 3. I wanted a small roadster this time and for price, performance, and looks, the MX-5 doesn’t hold a candle to the Sky Redline. About the only things that come close are the 350Z Roadster, Mustang Convertible, and Mitusbishi Spyder, which all cost and weigh more. Yeah, the Solstice gets you the same car for a little less cash, but the Sky looks better IMHO, and those looks aren’t ruined when you put a front license plate on it like it does on the Solstice. It’s amazing how many car designers forget that.

Yeah I’ve always thought the MX-5 was, and still is a great car. But this new Saturn is the sharpest looking 2-door roadster on the market today period, with the performace to back it up. Seems as though GM’s quality has gotten better these days as well. If given the choice I think I would have to go with the Saturn.

Saturns quality had no where to go but up. Lessee how the new models do, because the Vue was a disaster with the CVT and the Ion is as chintzy as they get. The L-series flopped and I actually knew a few who had them and they were pretty poor on the reliability front (Electrical mostly, but one L300 owner had crazy water leaks that he had to put a tarp over his car during rainstorms. Luckily it was a lease that got turned in early for an Altima)

Check back in a couple of years and see how the new crop of Saturns fare.

Don’t mean to be a wussbucket, but does it bother anyone that the Solstice/Sky doesn’t come with side-air bags? Crash tests have been poor without them. (MX-5 has side air bags.)

It bothers me that GM makes ABS and side airbags extra on lots of its vehicles. A $14990 Rabbit comes with ABS and 8 airbags as standard. Along with great build quality lots of other extras and great styling packed with European Sophistication.
I’ve read the reviews in European and American Car magazines, and whilst American magazines eulogized this and the Solstice, European magazines said it was an unsophisticated, badly built, slightly stodgy POS.

The seats are atrocious, the visibilty out the back is non-existant with the humps in sight-line, the gearbox has not been upgraded from a bare bones model and the build quality was sorely lacking.

Add to that, the gearbox is clunky to start with, but don’t expect a miracle coming from a Colorado pickup.

Have any of you actually driven the Sky, either standard engine or Red Line? If not, here’s my impressions after driving the standard engine version:

Interior is crisp, good looking, and most buttons and switches are in logical, easy to find locations. The driver’s seat was comfy but wrapped around me enough that I didn’t slip around while cornering. No points off as far as occupant experience goes:

Engine didn’t feel like 177 HP. I drove the 2006 Miata directly beforehand and it had much more ooomph both off the line and pulling through sweeping corners. I’m going to chalk this up to the automatic transmission (both the MX5 and the Sky had autos, but the Mazda’s felt darn close to a stick in responsiveness). I could get a little bit of tire squeal if I accelerated from a stop while turning – an easy trick for most front drivers – but that’s it. The “Push you into the seat” factor was missing.

Noisiness – I can’t say. The dealership put an aftermarket cold air intake on it that roared like a hurricane every time you stepped on the gas even a little bit. I highly recommend against anyone else doing the same. I THINK the exhaust had a pretty sweet note, but I couldn’t tell over that darn intake roar. Highway noise with the top up was also impacted by the intake roar, so I can’t say. I’d imagine the stock intake would have been much more enjoyable.

Looks – this is an amazing car. Better than just about anything else on the road in my opinion, both foreign or domestic, especially when you see it in person. Pictures don’t come close to doing it justice. By looks alone, this is the best looking small roadster available.

Usability: This is where it gets a big fat zero. There is NO room in the passenger compartment for anything more than a sheet of paper. Computer bag, even a slim one? Passenger seat. Groceries? Passenger seat. You better get used to riding alone all the time, ‘cuz you’re not going to be putting anything behind the seat, or even in any cubbies of significant size anywhere. But that’s OK – I drive an SLK right now, and I’m used to that. When I leave the office, I just pop the trunk of the SLK and throw the computer in the back – even with the top down on most roadsters you can throw a computer bag in – in fact most have aspired to fit in one or even two golf bags.
But on the Sky – nothin. In fact, to get to the trunk, you have to unsnap the rear roof hold-downs, get out and fold them up, open the clamshell trunk and put your briefcase – WHERE? There is a 6″ perimiter around a big hump that you can squish stuff into. Not even an overnight duffel bag would fit. When you’re done stuffing your stuff in the “trunk”, you have to lean over the back of the car and press the clamshell back down (you can try from the sides, but it just doesn’t latch that way), then re-snap the roof corners into place – walk around the car to do each one individually. Can you imagine doing this while it’s raining?

In almost all aspects but the engine, the car was an immediate sell for us (and we figured we could wait for the redline which would solve that problem). But the day-to-day usability just killed it for my wife and I. If you’re a lonely single person with no plans to have anyone ride with you, you might be comfortable throwing your briefcase and groceries in the passenger seat all the time – but for real people with real friends, GM really missed the boat with this design.

(Final decision was to order a Nissan 350Z BTW)
