GM prices Corvette ZR1 for UK

09/29/2008, 1:34 PM

By Drew Johnson

The Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 is arguably one of the best performance bargains in the U.S. despite its six-digit price tag, but apparently the ZR1’s value pricing doesn’t apply on the other side of the Atlantic. General Motors has announced UK pricing for the mighty ZR1, with a starting price of £109,000.

At £109,000 – which converts to almost $200,000 — the Corvette ZR1 is a full £7,000 more than a Porsche 911 Turbo and nearly 47 grand more than its baby brother, the Corvette Z06. Although the Nissan GT-R V-Spec has yet to hit the road, the surprisingly potent GT-R retails for about half that of the ZR1 in the UK.

But luckily for GM, it won’t have to find many buyers willing to part with £109,000. GM plans to sell two ZR1s in the UK this year, followed by “single digit volumes” in 2009 and beyond. With that kind of exclusivity, the ZR1 should be able to strike a chord with nine or less buyers.

Those lucky – and wealthy – enough to purchase a ZR1 will also receive an Advanced Driver Training Program (which should help the rare but very powerful ‘Vettes stay on the roads and out of the ditches) and a 3-year/60,000 mile warranty.

I love my Corvette and I admire the value of the ZR-1 compared to it’s performance, but when you up that figure to $200,000? Frankly if I was from anywhere in Europe, I wouldn’t be caught dead driving that, knowing that other people might knew what I paid for it.
Although I dare say that Advanced Driver Training Program would really benefit some of those wealthy Europeans who tend to buy and then destroy fast exotics.

I’m confused. Is the ZR1 being offered in such limited quantities because they won’t sell any more or because they can’t sell any more?

So much for the purchasing power of parity?
