General Motors announced late yesterday that Susan Docherty will replace outgoing vice president of U.S. sales, Mark LaNeve, effective October 16. Docherty currently serves as the general manager of GM’s Buick and GMC divisions.
LaNeve announced that he would leave GM for a non-automotive venture yesterday morning.

“Susan will bring a wealth of experience from previous marketing and sales assignments,” CEO Fritz Henderson said in a statement released to the medai. “I have confidence that she will bring a new perspective to the position as she guides a new, lean, and customer-focused dealer network.”

Docherty has been with GM in several capacities, according to the automaker, including general manager of the Hummer division and marketing director and brand manager for the Cadillac Escalade , in addition to a host of other managerial positions at GM’s Canadian and European operations. She has been with the automaker since 1986.

With sales down 45 percent last month, Docherty inherits a challenged automaker in a struggling economy.
