A loose windshield wiper hose has forced General Motors to recall nearly 45,000 examples of the Chevrolet Sonic, according to a filing posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Sonics built between May 5, 2011 and February 24, 2012 are said to contain the improperly attached hose, which could break off of the windshield washer fluid reservoir. If the hose came loose from its attachment to the reservoir, no windshield washer fluid would come out of the nozzles and onto the windshield.

Since the inability to properly clean a vehicle's windshield could increase the risk of a crash, NHTSA has asked GM to recall the 44,668 affected Sonics.

The automaker will begin notifying Sonic owners on September 7. The fix is fairly simple: GM will check the hose's attachment, something that will be performed free of charge by Chevrolet dealers. Owners can discern their vehicle's approximate build date by looking at the VIN sticker located inside the driver's side door jamb. Concerned owners can contact GM at 1-866-694-6546.

The recall is believed to affect both four-door sedan and five-door hatchback versions of the 2012 Sonic, which replaced the Chevrolet Aveo last year in North America. The subcompact cars are still marketed under the Aveo moniker in many global markets.
