GM recalls 10,000 Pontiac Vibes over cold weather brake issues

10/13/2009, 1:52 PM

By Andrew Ganz

Even though the brand is officially dead, General Motors is recalling 10,119 Pontiac Vibe hatchbacks over brake vacuum components that can freeze in very low ambient temperatures. The recall covers Vibes sold or currently registered in 19 northern states.

GM says that dealers will inspect and modify the brake vacuum lines on those Vibes covered by the recall. Vibes operated in warmer climate states are not being recalled, but GM has issued a service bulletin to modify the brake line for free.

The automaker says that the issue won’t prevent Vibes from coming to a stop, but it will increase stopping distances should the line freeze.

It is unclear if the Toyota Matrix, which was built along side the nearly-identical Vibe in a GM-Toyota joint-venture in California, will be recalled.

This will be interesting. The usual anti-American crowd usually crowes about the Vibe being a Toyota, but here’s a recall being done only by Pontiac/GM. hmmm, does the toyota not have a problem, or are they just dragging their feet?

And isn’t it interesting that Pontiac offered the better warranty on this car than Toyota in the first place…

so yes, it think since the toyota is the same damn thing as the vibe, toyota will have to recall the vehicles.

oh, wait. toyota may lose a few dollars, they could always just zip tie the breaks calipers together.

PERHAPS the reason that GM put out the recall two months after Toyota did is because Toyota is in charge of the investigation and solution/fix. This is a Toyota engineered issue with Toyota sourced and assembled components. All GM could do here is get the consumer data, request help/solution from Toyota and then wait for the proper recall solution. PERHAPS Toyota was not forthcoming with the help. Then again GM could have sat on the recall. All supposition here.

What is strange is the recall is happening at the end of the summer. This issue would only occur in the dead of winter. So both GM and Toyota have known since last winter. Of course there was time to do the recall since it only happens in the winter.

I do not quite understand why people are bitching about GM not being able to build cars due to the recall on the Vibe. Last time I checked, the Vibe platform is almost 100% Toyota with a Pontiac front end. The Matrix and Vibe were a joint venture between GM and Toyota. If you look at the drive on both of them they are the same. A Toyota sourced 4 cylinder engine. So perhaps those who are bad mouthing GM for not being able to build vehicles should be pointing their fingers at Toyota instead as the Pontiac Vibe is the same vehicle as the Matrix or Corolla wagon in other parts of the world.
