General Motors has announced a recall involving its popular Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain models. The recall is due to a defect in the crossovers’ tire pressure monitoring system.

GM is recalling 33,962 Equinox and Terrain models from the 2012 model year for a tire pressure monitoring system that fails to comply with federal regulations. Per federal rules a vehicle’s tire pressure monitoring system must warn a driver when a tire is 25 percent below its recommended pressure, but the system used in the Equinox and Terrain will not illuminate a warning until the tire pressure is more than 25 percent below the recommended level.

The NHTSA warns that under-inflated tires can result in overheating, which increases the liklihood of a blowout and crash. Under-inflated tires can also lead to premature and irregular wear.

Dealers will remedy the problem by the body control monitor in the vehicles’ tire pressure monitoring system. The recall is slated to begin this month.
