Hoping to avoid its own version of the Ford truck fire fiasco (pictured), General Motors and the NHTSA are ordering the recall of 38,439 General Motors SUVs and pickups because of a potential fuel leak that could result in an engine compartment fire. GM is recalling the 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche, 2004-2006 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500, 2006 Chevrolet Kodiak, 2004-2006 Chevrolet Silverado, 2004-2005 Chevrolet Suburban, 2006 Chevrolet Suburban 1500, 2004-2006 GMC Sierra, 2006 GMC Topkick 6500, and 2004-2006 GMC Yukon XL.

GM is just taking care of it’s customer’s, just like Toyota, the 2006 recall King. After all, thisis a positive thing, protecting your customer and being proactive with your recall efforts, why, I’ll even bet that it’ll strengthen the brand, just like the story on Toyota a few weeks back. Go job GM, you’re #1 for a reason !!

After recalling 1 million vehicles worldwide in July, Toyota Motor Corp. faces the bruising prospect of more recalls in the United States.
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has upgraded an investigation into reports of excessive wear of a front suspension part in 2003 and 2004 Toyota Tundra pickups.
The agency said Monday that it had opened a separate probe into 2004 and 2005 Toyota Sienna minivans after receiving reports of four injuries that occurred when the liftgates shut unexpectedly.
The investigations deal a fresh blow to Toyota, which was rebuked last month by the Japanese government because of the growing number of recalls. They are up sharply in the past year and a half, threatening to undermine Toyota’s reputation as the industry benchmark for quality.
In 2005, its U.S. recalls doubled after the Japanese automaker recalled 775,000 light trucks, including Tacoma pickups and Sequoia sport-utility vehicles, due to potentially loose ball joints in the suspension. If the ball joints separate, the driver can lose control of the vehicle.
The U.S. safety agency’s upgraded probe focuses on the same component in as many as 219,522 Tundras that were not covered by last year’s recall.
“We are cooperating fully with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration,” said Ming-Jou Chen, a spokeswoman for Toyota Motor Sales USA.
The agency’s safety review is a three-stage process, starting with a preliminary evaluation, as in the case of the Sienna liftgates. Three-fourths of those reviews are concluded without further action.
The others are upgraded to a second phase, called an engineering analysis. Seven in 10 of those upgraded probes lead to recalls.
“This tarnishes their reputation a little bit,” said Eric Merkle, forecasting director at IRN Inc., a consulting firm in Grand Rapids.
“Toyota is viewed as the pinnacle of quality. That isn’t something they established in the last year or two. They did that over 30 or 40 years, and it doesn’t go away overnight,” Merkle said.
Riding on a reputation for top quality and reliability, Toyota has increased sales rapidly. Last month, it overtook Ford Motor Co. in the monthly U.S. sales rankings for the first time. On a global basis, it seems on course to overtake GM within a few years.
But analysts question whether Toyota’s rapid expansion has undercut vehicle quality.
In July, Japan’s Transport Ministry told Toyota to review its recall procedures following a criminal investigation into the response of three Toyota managers to reports of defects. They are alleged to have known about a steering problem in Toyota Hilux SUVs years before a 2004 accident that may have been caused by that defect.
Toyota says the managers acted appropriately. But it will increase inspections and add engineers to check problems that might cause accidents. It plans to store information about problems for 20 years, up from 10 currently. And in cases where it deems a recall unnecessary, Toyota will monitor the vehicles more closely.

Anonymous, you’re dumb. This is a recall of 38,000 vehicles. While GM did not recall anything last month, Toyota was busy recalling more than a million vehicles over 4 or more vehicle lines. The GM recall involves only the 8100 engine, due to a small clip that a supplier likely screwed up. Toyota was having problems with its assembly processes, like scratching the ball joints just right so they fail.
GM has been getting almost as much buzz lately for being quality as Toyota, and although this will be overplayed in the media, this is a miniscule problem. Compare this to 400,000 Tundras recalled twice for LATCH non compliance or ball joints, or the 1.2 million F150’s with the cruise control problem. Of course, GM isn’t under investigation for covering up problems like Toyota and Ford are/have, because this recall is proactive. No injuries even!

GM should just give out free fire extinguishers with every truck they sell.

Sorry, but no recall is truly voluntary once the NHTSA is involved. It’s all a matter of timing, knowing when to give in before your hand is forced, generating bad publicity. GM is a well oiled PR machine that has been generating a lot (if not too much) lately.
Ford was also a victim of a bad part they didn’t manufacture so don’t get all high and mighty Mike. And with GM’s announcement this week that they are going to be sharing parts across more model lines to save money, the potential for a problem like this in an even larger scale now has more potential.

The only “buzz” GM has been getting about quality is that from their supporters who are trying their damndest to convince the non-believers that their is an improvment.
30+ years erased in just one month… astounding.

This just proves that GM is coming back and they’re making the trucks everyone wants. They’re so hot!, They’re on fire! They’re better than Fords, they catch on fire faster and burn hotter. These things should sell like hotcakes, everyone’s going to buy three of them so when they catch on fire, you’ll have spares.

Toyota had way over 2 million recalls over 3 months, 5 to 6 different ones if not more. Some, if not all forced to do so by the Japanese government. So much for Toyotas good will and looking after their customers. Look up AP articles on Toyota recalls. Still all cars have imperfections and flaws, it’s just to what degree you are brain washed that allows you to see them or recognize the fact.

People are brainwashed. Toyota has just as many if not more problems than other auto manufacturers.
But you also have to look at something else. They recall there vehicles the correct way, they get them fixed at no charge to the owner and quickly.
I’m still suprised at how many vehicles get recalled every month.
Also I’m suprised that they didn’t test this more vigorously. A fuel leakage in the engine compartment… That’s very serious. How’d they miss that in testing!
But as long as they recall them quickly and efficiently, give the car back as it was with the problem now fixed, and at no charge to the owner of the vehicle then it isn’t that bad, all done for.

Anonymous, your an idiot whom really knows nothing about cars, you just like stirring the pot with people on this forum. Obviously you have nothing better to do. Maybe it’s time to get a job , move out of mommy’s basement, quit spending the day jerkin to mommy’s Cosmo magazine, and yes you’ll need to give up the keys to her Hyundai Accent as well you uneducated dumb ass. You would’nt know quality if it hit you in the face, all cars are basically built well this decade, safety and reliability are much improved since 10 years ago (when you were what, like 11)Any car produced the last 5 to 10 years will go well over 150k if it is taken care of. All manufactures have recalls, most are voluntary some are forced by the NHSTA. Get on the NHSTA website and you will see almost an equal amount of recalls from each manufacture including the beloved can’t do anything wrong Honda and Toyota. Do your homework.

My 2005 Sierra caught on fire in the interstate. My mother was with me and she noticed smoke coming out of the vents. (no one was hurt) I had to drive about a mile to get to a safe place to avoid hazard to other cars. When I stopped it was all we could do to evacuate the truck before flames filled the cab. The truck was completely totalled.
GM denied my claim without even investigating it. I lost a lot of personal items and weeks from work.
What should I do? any thoughts or ideas appreciated.
