First, New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman said GM is “more dangerous to America’s future” than any other company, and is “like a crack dealer” addicting Americans to SUVs. Later, GM responded to the article saying most SUV owners need their vehicles, and GM is working hard on alternative fuels. Friedman then replied back with a 1,200 word article saying, “no one should be making a huge gas-guzzling Hummer.” Now, GM’s Steven J. Harris is back on the offensive, saying Hummers make up just 1.6 percent of the automaker’s sales. “It’s one of our lower-volume brands, but has a loyal following of off-road enthusiasts.” He also 2007 full-size SUVs have been “selling very well, without any national rebates.” Harris completely rejected Friedman’s claim that E85 vehicles are the result of a “shameful federal loophole.” While E85 doesn’t represent a complete solution, “it’s an important start” to reducing oil consumption.
