GM scraps pre-NAIAS GM Style event

In a cost-cutting move, General Motors is dropping its celebrity-laden GM Style event prior to the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The automaker has also cut television advertising and sponsorship from two other glamorous events: The 2009 Academy Awards and the Primetime Emmy Awards.

The Style event, which had in the past been a mix between an auto show, a Hollywood fashion show and a rock concert, had long attracted top-ranked celebrities to the Motor City prior to the auto show held every January.

According to the Detroit News, the automaker will use its budget to focus on advertising new vehicle launches and the brand as a whole, as well as the automaker’s centennial celebration next month.

While it’s in a cutting mode, GM should also cut some of its redundant divisions.
