General Motors has asked for $2.6 billion in low-interest loans from the United States Energy Department that the automaker says will be used for research and development of fuel-efficient hybrid vehicles. The automaker is looking to develop two spin-offs of its upcoming Chevrolet Volt.
GM is now seeking a total of $10.3 billion from the U.S. Energy Department’s program designed to help domestic automakers develop fuel-efficient cars. This is the third time GM has requested a loan under the program.

The automaker says that it made the request yesterday via the U.S. Treasury.

GM hasn’t made it clear to the public just what further Volt programs it is looking to develop, but odds point to at least one of the two spin-offs as a production-version of the Cadillac Converj concept (pictured) that was shown earlier this year at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
