-Most Americans perceive diesels as dirty. Personally, I see diesels as dirty simply because there are no real smaller offerings aside from Volkswagen which until have sold alright, and because of tight restrictions all diesel vehicles are large, larger than what I need, larger than what a general public needs. The Big Three had their chance with diesels in the 70’s and 80’s, but they created a nightmare with horrible, dirty diesel engines that were noisy, inefficient and downright dirty with little investment. Also because of this memory, I think people will associate diesel engines with large passenger cars with diesels from the 80’s, or large trucks.
-GM already has the Volt for that. The Volt I feel will do a better job presenting that image.
-All of the planned engines are only for full size trucks, and the possibility of sedans is still open.
-Restrictions on diesel emissions are so horribly stringent, just making it to the United States with a diesel option is something to brag about. Selling them is a different issue…

Aside from that, I think that if anybody was to come out with diesel options, it should be Saturn. Their engine bays and transmissions are already well fit for such an engine from their European counterparts, their going for that “European image”, and have a large enough lineup to really make a difference.

dalbaht- GM and Ford are not slowly dying companies. Chrysler has been in this before, and while I don’t think this will be the last time they show no real signs of change.

Ford has just broken over even. They have captured a huge share of the European market, Chinese market and South American market, and continue to dominate in those areas.

Kia and Hyundai have yet to come close to the perceived, and real life quality of the Big Three.

Owning Hummer doesn’t result in them owning Humvee. That’s your own perception.

What vehicles and technology are you talking about that hits 40+ miles per gallon from Tata?

Why do you think it’s funny that America can’t compete? We’re still one of the number one suppliers of technology, our scientific community is one of the most advanced in the world, we are one of the most diverse nations you’ll ever find, we play a leading role in manufacturing, specifically machinery, guns and ammunition, metals, precious metals, etc.. We have one of the worlds best economies, with some of the lowest taxes. We have a high age expectancy, and have never been attacked on our own lands… If you’d like to argue about others competing, then feel free to do so. India has a huge workforce, but it’s not being used to it’s full potential. I’m not a real expert on this sort of stuff, but I can tell you right now, I’m proud to be American and happy you have so much pride in your country.

nonamedenton- I wouldn’t say Tata is doing things we don’t know about, I think what you mean to say is the spotlight hasn’t been shining on them till recently. Info’s there, just not on the front page.

I don’t know if Indians are stupid, but LaCaLover certainly aren’t too smart to generalize. Here’s a hint, Chinese don’t have that “bigger is better” mentality. Plus, they couldn’t careless about the Hummer or Humvee. If they were to buy a big SUV, the Mitsubishi Prado and Toyota Land Cruiser are the perennial there.

Good riddance to Hummer. GM already has 2 other truck brands, still one more than they need.
