GM showcases student designs

GM has released images of the winning entries from the “You Make a Difference,” project that offers Detroit public high school students the opportunity to work with mentors from General Motors Design Center and students from the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, to design a vehicle that would appeal to 17-25 year olds. The winners were Marcus Henderson, Darrien Pope, Tashif Turner, Justin Roberson, and Jayna Shropshire. Images after the jump…

this is the best from grade 11? whoa. these are not that good. I am only 3 years older then these kids. Im not even talking about the drawing skills (which should be better considering these were the winners), i dont see any originality.

The “Shadow Roadster” looks like crude sketch of the Camaro Concept, although someone should have informed Mr. Henderson that roadsters don’t have roofs. All of the pics look like they were done by 6th graders.

Yeah… these really are not that good. I the one shown in the thumbnail upper right is alright and surprisingly the crappy looking cars are the best drawn but what’s going on with the perspective?

Wow… GM can’t even draw decent looking cars! I’m surprised they suck this much… those poor kids. How dead must they be inside to have come up with this?

before all of you knock these kids for trying, about 90% of these students never knew what car design was, nor do they have the adquate items required to complete these sketches. they are from detroit public schools, and almost all the students had never drawn cars before.

i was one of the ccs mentors for the program. it was great to see these kids be introuduced to this type of stuff. it has been a very rewarding experence for me. It was good to spark new intrest in these students.

It says:

and to top it off it had a nice big GM logo to the right.

In response to Rob, the worst drawing here is the one drawn by a student from a school for the arts. Somebody should kick him out, ’cause his drawing sucks. And not enough adequete items?! Are you joking?! All it takes is a pencil, ruler, and a creative mind. Don’t give me that bull about not enough adequete items. Just admit that the creativity and skills aren’t there. My 12 year old cousin can draw better designs than these. Psh.

hey, josh, ford doing actually wuite well, first off, and these inner city kids just need creativity and determination to draw well, and they arent surrounded in failiure, just a bad area. thses look like pipe dreams gone wrong. just straight bad

From everything I’ve read on the program, I think it was a fairly good idea. Who could argue with teaching inner city kids to draw cars under the guidance of GM designers? The problem, like most things, was in the execution. I find it extremely hard to believe that of the thousands of kids in Detroit, or even just the 50 that participated in the program, that these five drawings were the best of the best. I’m not saying we should be expecting to see outstanding sketches, or even Bangle-bad sketches, from these kids because they obviously haven’t had the years of training to hone their skills. I’m just saying that after 16+ hours of working on these drawings, this was the best of the best?

#17, nice stereo type there josh. If they are poor and uneducated then it means they are black? Have you been to the midwest? or South? It will redefine the meaning of poor and uneducated.
