Although General Motors announced that the rear-wheel-drive Zeta platform will return to North America in a four-door form as a Chevrolet Caprice police car, the automaker’s Australian outlet, Holden, separately announced a Chevrolet Caprice “police car of the future” show car co-developed with Australia’s National Safety Agency.
Holden and NSA actually collaborated on a pair of cars, including the black-and-white LAPD Caprice, based on the Holden Statesman, and a shorter-wheelbase Pontiac G8, which was used solely to show off the cabin technologies. There are no plans to revive the G8.
On top of the basic Caprice PPV – as it is officially known – the show car adds a number of advances. Most notable on the interior (NSA used a Pontiac G8 for its interior show car) is the massive touch screen display. It replaces the entire center stack and, presumably, can control quite a bit more than the audio and climate control systems. Holden calls it a “consolidated user interface” and it features such advances as automatic license plate recognition, wireless connectivity, fingerprint and facial recognition capability and, of course, the standard police computer features.
NSA says that the integrated computer makes the passenger compartment safer and reduces aftermarket upfit costs for police agencies.
The computer – a Panasonic ToughBook – fits in a special trunk-mounted compartment.
Helping to power the license plate recognition system is a forward-looking infrared night-vision camera.
Though Holden didn’t release any specifics, the automaker says that the police car concept features a virtual prisoner cell in the back seat.
The Caprice is based on the Holden Statesman and the Middle Eastern-market Chevrolet Caprice. To be built in Australia, the Caprice is expected to go on sale in 2010 in North America for police outfits only.

i didn’t translate from G8 to cop car as well as i expected, as A4 and Denver mentioned, it kinda looks too much like the impala, i don’t think it is scary, it lacks personality, plus the name… i mean don’t get me wrong caprice is a name with a history and everything but come on! why that name, why not something else more badass? something cool like the “Chevy Phoenix”… it would sound badass and it is also quite reasonable… you know the G8 died and came back, like a phoenix… because i dunno but caprice, i don’t like that name… i was expecting to see larger front, air dams, you know make it look more badass…

So, let’s kill the G8 with intentions of keeping it on as a Chevy, but hot darn, we’re gonna import a handful as cop cars. For the love of all that’s good, just make it the new Impala / Caprice and justify the importing. The Impala needs a major redesign anyway.

This is pretty interesting. But if GM utilized the G*’s interior in the current Impala, then they could have something on their hands. I like the combination. But I don’t like the fact that they (cops) will have more techno gadgets than Best Buy does and that they will have automatic license plate readers. Just another reason for people to hate driving.

I’m taking a serious look at a G8 this week (I don’t kid when I’m seriously looking). I find it hard to feel bad about this model being cancelled when there is a ton of new G8’s around St. Louis. One dealer who isn’t a big volume dealer has about 15 on it’s lot right now, so it’s not like these are setting the sales books on fire. If you want one, buy one.

Automatic license plate readers? KarLoveBoy is exactly right about that giving us more reasons to hate driving… They already check our plates enough without any cause. Right after I got my first sportbike I had gone to buy something from a grocery store, I parked quite legally. I came out to find a cop waiting for me by my bike who proceeded to interrogate me as to why my bike didn’t come up as registered in my state (Brand new, DUH).
I don’t know if he was trolling the lot checking everyone or just picking on a sportbike owner hoping I had run from a state trooper or something…

OK, having looked at those pics, there are two people who didn’t do their jobs. In the right-most interior pic there is a loose-hanging trim piece on the right side of the center console. So the preparer forgot to fix that before the shoot, OR the photographer forgot to edit that out, or at least point it out. And if someone OK’d the pics after they were taken, a THIRD person didn’t do their job. Big miss guys.

IMO this was a good move by Chevy since this car already existed in the Middle-East. While not the most exciting name, the name Caprice has been a long time friend of the police. With the elimination of 4 brands GM needs to get numbers where they can and this is one area that they have neglected for a long time. If this program is successful it will significantly increase the odds of a future RWD consumer car.

This looks like a pretty good car. Same basic thing as the G8 but with more understated Chevrolet bagding and paneling. V6 and V8 options in RWD. WHY again, aren’t they selling this as a standard Chevy? If they offered it again with a 6-speed manual I’d certainly take a look at one. GM is missing a very obvious market here considering that they’ve already decided to sell it as a fleet vehicle.

…and I don’t buy it that it is, for some reason, “not good enough” for the general population. Maybe they think it’s TOO good for the general population and I don’t buy that either because it isn’t. It is a good car though and there is NO reason why Chevrolet shouldn’t sell a regular Caprice lineup. Fuel economy not good enough? They already have a 2.0 direct injection turbo engine they could update and use in this car and improve those economy numbers. For the love of God, it’s been long enough that you haven’t been able to go into a Chevrolet or Buick showroom for a sub-luxury RWD sedan. They have the car and they have the physical manufacturing and legal power to move production from Australia to the U.S.
Law enforcement get a practical and solid modern RWD sedan while the rest of us are told that FWD Impalas, Malibus, Lucernes, etc. are worth the money they’re asking for them– even if they quality is up to par now.

Apparently only a few of us get the fact that this is not a new design right down to the rear end that is reminiscent of the Impala. This car has been sold as the Chevrolet Caprice in other markets already.
The last paragraph in the article tells you that.
I am glad that they’ll be getting this and not the G8 body style.
I still think that killing off the G8 before the end of its life cycle was a mistake but can’t complain as I wouldn’t have bought one just like most of the people posting here. If they were selling like hotcakes they’d still be around.

I know lots of “pigs”, and only a few of them are like that. Most of the ones I know are college graduates, speak many languages, and still choose to be a “pig” so they can feel like they make a difference. Also, most of the ones I know are rather pleasant to deal with, and are very respectful.
But if you don’t break the law, you don’t have to worry about “pigs” bullying you.

They obviously made a good decision to use a platform that is in production, is large enough to please the intended customer (police departments not Joe Average) and make a few extra bucks when not too many people on the street are buying cars. Holden obviously makes cars that are similiar to American tastes, the journalist have gushed about the G8 and GTO before it, except for styling. If they are fairly easily federalized, and take an American powertrain how could they not be an improvement over the Ford dinosours? The mpg complaints are a joke, in Mayberry the cops dont need to be driving fire breathing engines but I wouln’t want to be in Chicago, L.A., Miami, etc. with a car who’s major purpose is to save mpg’s and not move like stink when I needed it to. The Charger is hardly an engineering masterpiece, it started its life on a dated platform. While it may have been better than other Chrysler offerings at the time, the current G.M. rear wheel drive platforms have gotten much praise, ranging from the Zeta to the Pontiacs based on the Holdens.
