General Motors has announced that it will speed up production plans for the 2009 Pontiac Vibe. Introduced in 2002 as a 2003 model, the Vibe was the result of a joint venture between GM and Toyota — Toyota’s model being the Matrix. The Vibe was popular when it debuted, but has since lost popularity due to an increased competition within the segment.
Originally slated to begin production in late 2008, GM now plans to roll the first 2009 Vibes off the assembly line in early 2008 with the first cars hitting showrooms in the spring or summer of next year. The next-generation Vibe will remain a sister vehicle to the Toyota Matrix , which should bow at the same time. The 2009 Vibe is expect to make its debut at either this year’s Detroit or Los Angeles auto show.
