General Motors announced on Monday that it will invest C$90 million ($85.2 million USD) into its Ingersoll, Ontario CAMI production facility. The CAMI plant produces the popular Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain crossover vehicles.
The 2010 Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain have been met with strong market demand, prompting General Motors to expand the crossovers’ CAMI production plant. The investment will be used to re-tool the plant’s West Body Shop.
“Proudly built in Canada at CAMI, the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain are two of GM’s hottest selling products,†Arturo Elias, president, GM Canada, said in a statement. “This investment is an excellent example of what happens when you get the product right. If the product is right, everything else follows – increased production, increased employment and strong market demand.â€
The plant revamp – which will be completed in about seven months – will increase the facility’s annual production capacity by about 40,000 units. In order to keep up with the production boost, GM will recall 150 laid off workers, bringing the plant’s total number of recalled workers to 450.
