I used to work there and they do not make the XL7 anymore. They are equiping the other half of the weld shop for the 40,000 more units extra per year of chevy’s and Terrains they are going to put out of there starting next june. Since the XL7 didnt sell much they slowly faded out and just built spare parts. Right now suzuki doesnt have anything coming down the tube for Cami but who knows if they will ever have anything come there again.

But what is CAMI?

CAMI is a joint venture between GM and Suzuki.

“Production began in April of 1989 as an opportunity for GM to offer economy cars and Suzuki to access the North American market. Over the years, CAMI has produced various entry-level vehicles such as the Chevy Metro, Pontiac Firefly, Suzuki Swift, Chevy Tracker, Suzuki Sidekick, and the Suzuki Vitara. Production of new mid-size SUV products began in 2004 with the Chevrolet Equinox, the Pontiac Torrent (2005) and the Suzuki XL7 (2006).

Production of the newly designed 2010 Chevrolet Equinox began in May 2009 with the GMC Terrain production beginning in August 2009.”

Do they still build the XL7? It does not show up on Suzukis website and since it was on the old platform it is probably gone.

Chuck, confused by your comment. GM was in a partnership with Toyota to build the Pontiac Matrix at Nummi. Pontiac is gone and GM no longer needed the Matrix. Toyota, which now also has huge overcapacity, decided to shut down the Nummi plant and build their vehicles elsewhere. Nummi is gone for good as far as I know.

the CAMI plant has built GM vehicles for many years and the GM vehicles built there are in higher demand than GM expected. GM is increasing capacity to build more.

If GM can build more vehicles that are in demand, that translates to more revenues, more profits. If the Company can generate free cash flow, they can begin repaying the Government loans. IN this instance the Company is making a sound business decision. GM Keep up the Good work.

I am not to familiar with the detailed inner workings of these plants, but why didn’t they just put that money towards revamping the NUMMI plant in California. Has NUMMI been shut down for good? I understand that the expansion is only bringing back 150 people, which isn’t much compared to the thousands let go, to increase production to 40,000 more units. Can anyone shed some light?

what type of engineering are you in? you should be able to find a placement in Ontario, maybe commute a bit, but still probably closer/easier than either moving to the states for 4 months or hitting the border twice a day.

I didn’t realize Oshawa became Ingersoll all of a sudden. Someone got their facts wrong

“GM to increase production in Oshawa, Ingersoll Canadian Auto Dealer magazine reports that General Motors of Canada plans to increase production schedules at several plants, including its Oshawa, ON assembly plant and the CAMI plant in Ingersoll, ON.”

Friend of mine did his engineering co-op there, said it was a pretty sweet place. sounds good that it will expand, maybe I wont have to goto the US to do my engineering co-op.

If you did not realize, GM also sells vehicles in Canada. They probably sell more vehicles in Canada than they build there. (build Impala, Camaro, Terrain, Equinox, sell pretty much everything)

Canada owns 12% of GM.

the Canadian government gave GM Loans too, even though i would like to see them built here and give one of are plants money. Most of the money for a car goes back to where the car company home land is, so about 80% of the money comes back here any way.

Suppliers in the US also will be making more money because of a larger demand for there parts

WOW! We the USA paying tax payer gives GM money to help them and now they are not even using the money to pay back much less stimulate OUR economy on our own soil. So typical of GM. I think the Obama Administration should step in and they should invest in an AMERICAN plant!
