I think, to reduce weight, GM should shrink its pickups and SUVs back down to how they were in the ’90′s, but keep the same drivetrains. These days even the 6.0L V8 looks as small in todays trucks as a 250ci V8 did in a ’57 Chevy. Even though current interior space is great, I felt just fine in a ’90′s pickup. The only thing I would change, however, is the length of the extended cab as it was too short back then.

The basic chassis’ used in all of Detroit’s full size trucks and SUVs are so solid (hydroformed, fully boxed) that there really is no point to further development in that regard. We’ve just about all said the Ranger still works fine and it’s got a least half a decade on The Simpsons. Lighter body components, more efficient engines and transmissions: that’s the way to go. There will always be a need for trucks, but the current crop are pretty polished- some might say too much so.

In Mexico you see these Chevy Tornado’s, it’s a small, unibody, 1.8L truck, kind of like a the old Brat. I think that’s what one of the above poster’s was talking about in Brazil.

C’mon, how long would it take to get that ready for sale in the US???

GM starts reinventing itself when its too late. So typical of domestic auto maker mentality, no long term thinking. And now they will be in a mad rush to develop smaller more effecient cars which will end up being unreliable junk because of the frantic pace needed to develop these new cars inorder to compete with import car makers. Also I will never buy a vehicle built by a UAW/CAW worker.

I-6 yields about the same mileage as V8 in GM case. That’s may explains why they are less then popular.

When there is this much uncertainty in the market it makes sense to take a pause to capture newer trends. Like maybe things get so bad, they consider developing a lot of carbon fiber and aluminum parts with the goal of reducing weight. Heck with the price of steel going up so much, it may be a cost saving move!

In other (more informative) articles I’ve read about this, they said they are still going to improve upon the current models, including drivetrains and interiors. I hope they get the diesel in there, and how about using a detuned, more efficient version of the I-6 from the Trailblazer in a base model? It’s one of the best non-V8 motors they have, never understood why it’s not used more in the Pickups.

Halting SUV development makes sense. They shouldn’t flat-out stop truck development, though. People with businesses need trucks, but they often dont need the behemoths they drive. GM should work with its partners on resurrecting things along the lines of a Chevy Luv but with a bit more balls. In Brazil Chevy offers an Opel Corsa-based pickup that gets 30 mpg and will carry 1600 pound in the bed. That’s the type of crap they need to design/build.

Hey now, after 3-4 years if steady oil price increases from $20 to $140/bbl the light bulb at are GM is turned on. Carl Icahn said something of this sort: “If you build good corporation that even idiot can run it, eventually he will”.

Despite epiphany at GM (which is as expedient as digesting of morning newspapers in a mental institution), hell of a lot of posters on this forum still don’t get it and probably never will.

Make it look like a toyota, keep all the GM badging off, but leave ALL the GM parts. People will NEVER know the difference. They will brag about how great their “toyota” is. And when there’s a problem with it, they’ll say, “Oh it’s not a big deal, things happen” Then when they find out it’s a Chevrolet they’ll start the import loving fest on how crappy American vehicles are.
