"Quote" from strc09:

GM has not built a legacy of building crap for the last 30+ years as madcapp stated in his post. GM has some of the most reliable and visually appealing cars made, not to mention more powerful. Ooooo…the Mustang now has 300hp. I’m impressed…not. I can go out and buy a GenIV LS1 F-Body and still spank a new Mustang. Pathetic.

With the exception of the 80s, F-Body cars ruled the streets with few exceptions by Mustang (few exceptions). Do a little research about the late 60s and up to mid 70s F-Body. It wasn’t until the GenIII F-Body was introduced that Mustang had an advantage, but not for long.

Even in the late 80s the F-Body started making a comeback at the Mustang with the introduction the IROC and GTA/Formula 350s and let’s not forget the 1992 SLP Firehawk (more powerful than previous F-bodies and later production F-Bodies). These were very capable cars to throw down against the 5.0 Mustangs. As far as the Firebird…they have always offered more power and bigger engines than Camaro, until all motors became GM Corporate motors instead of the individual brand motors once offered.

Also, Firebird does not represent white trash hicks and trailor trash ingrates to as many people as you think. The lines of the Firebird have always been more exoctic than its sister car. That’s what DeLorean wanted when he ushered in the era of the GenII Firebird. That’s what he got. A car more visually appealing, that looked fast, and had the power to back it up.

This is SOOOOO true strc09! From first hand experience driving Firebirds, Camaros, and Mustangs, that the Firebird is the best of those three. There is a level of refinement in the Firebird not seen in crappy Mustangs and if anything represents white trailer trash it's the Camaro. The handling, power, reliability, and cooler looks, always belonged to the Firebird. John Delorean was a genius designer, look at the DeLorean now! Still not a spot of rust and some are still on the road after almost 30 years! Just expect to pay a mint for parts. Nice to see mention of the Firehawks and IROCs in there too, good cars that were very powerful in the day.

Listen up all you Firebird Fanatics....
The Firebird is on it's way!!!!
I've caught wind from a reliable source that works at a GM development plant.
He told me that the Trans Am is a hush-hush project and it won't be finished for another year.
The Trans Am is going to be one screaming machine. It's being refered as the new generation of muscle cars. Going back to old school with the revamped high output 455 pushing 600hp standard.
There is also a twin turbo that is boasting 1000hp with speed tests over 220mph !!!
It will be the most feared american muscle car on the street today.
The new Camaro has been brought back to lay the slap down on the mustang and challenger.
The Trans Am has been brought back to level the Viper and Ford GT.
2010 is supposed to be the year, so if you want one you better start saving up.
From what he said they are not going to producing a lot of them and they are not going to be cheap.

Its amazing how all these "fans" of the Camaro are putting down the Mustang, when the reason that the Camaro/Trans Am's where killed was do to the lack of sales stemming from low horsepower/consumer intrest in the product, yet on the Ford side, even when the mustang hit its lowest point, and talks/rumors were to end the production of the Mustang the true devoted mustang lovers stepped up to the plate and kept the Mustang going by showing Ford that they would buy the fox body even though they thought that it was the second worst body style change in the long history of the car. Where were all the Camaro lovers when the line hit a bump in the market? Thats right, they were on Welfare or the unemployment lines, bet they still have the Camaro up on blocks in front of their moblehomes.. :)

I have a 2007 Mustang GT, and I am tired of not having any compitiion at the lights and the old Camaros just hang back, so PLEASE BRING IT BACK!!!!

"1992 SLP Firehawk (more powerful than previous F-bodies and later production F-Bodies). These were very capable cars to throw down against the 5.0 Mustangs"

Funny how you guys keep comparing the stock mustang GT's to the top of the line GM competitors, how about putting the tables right, the GT500 is the top of the line, and that would be the one to compare to the Firehawk, or the new GTO with the 5.7L, the Ford GT is the competitor to the Corvette, and the Mustang GT is a 4.6L V8 and would compare to the RS Camaro.
Dodge brought back the Challenger, and they are offering 3 powertains that range from a small V8 to a HUGE V8, so you cant just pull up to a stop light and say "ohh its a challenger so I can beat it" you have to compare apples to apples..

P.S. look at the misspells!! you would think that Camaro guys didn't finish high school!! LOL

If GM was smart, they would bring back the Trans Am at a price point roughly $1000.00 less the the Mustang, which has been around since '64, and shows no sign of slowing down. This way they could get back a good portion of the market. But they can't get ridiculous with the prices like they did. They should also start listening to the customers, which is something they stopped doing a long time ago.

It would be foolish for GM not to build a Firebird/Trans Am to go with the new Camaro. They go hand in hand, they have been since 1967. It won't cost much more to develop, as the Camaro is basically done now.

GM cannot fall back on truck and SUV sales for profits anymore, gas prices are going to prevent that. Yes, gas crises did kill muscle cars in the 70s. But, these new ones could probably get from 20 city -32 hwy. MPG, even with a V8, due to updated technology and driveline gearing. Who knows with cylinder deactivation maybe a bit more. I think they would be pretty popular, with a 6 cylinder RS Camaro cheaply priced, along with a Firebird counterpart.

Also, I don't get what the top brass at GM is talking about- no one wants a Firebird. It's one of the most well known and respected marques GM produced.

The GTO flopped because of negative popular opinions about it's somewhat bland exterior, it isn't a bad car, just doesn't measure up to the competition as far as your average consumer views are concerned. The Firebird would fare much better.

I think the new Camaro looks great the way it is. Look at some of the retarded designs Toyota and Honda are getting away with, why isn't anyone complaining about them? GM needs to come out with something that will obviously put them to shame, the new F-bodies can be the introduction to a phenomenon, and the Firebird is a necessary part of it.

I hope it's built, I plan on buying the new Camaro when it comes out, but I'd love the freedom to choose a black Trans Am more.

GM needs to take the camaro back to the drawing board. it is ugly as hell. while they are redesigning it, they need to hit the GO button on the trans am. it looks awesome. thank god the GTO is dead, they should have known that no one wanted a Grand Am on crack. perfect example of a good idea gone bad at gm. 400 hp, great. 6 speed tranny, also great. make it look like a grand am, not so great. i hope they retro it. at any rate, you GM diehards can talk crap about the new mustang all you want. yeah, its only 300 HP, but i paid 28K for my fully loaded 06 new. what do you think GM is gonna charge you for the camaro, firebird, or GTO with those 400+ ponies?? a lot more than 28K for 300. you'll be lucky to pay below 40K. and by that time, GT500 prices will most likely be down to msrp. (43K) and you'll be dealing with many of those 500 HP monsters on the road. Mustang will still be at top as it traditionally has, being the best bang for the buck.

6 speed tranny, also great. make it look like a grand am, not so great. i hope they retro it. at any rate, you GM diehards can talk crap about the new mustang all you want. yeah, its only 300 HP, but i paid 28K for my fully loaded 06 new. what do you think GM is gonna charge you for the camaro, firebird, or GTO with those 400+ ponies?? a lot more than 28K for 300. you’ll be lucky to pay below 40K. and by that time, GT500 prices will most likely be down to msrp. (43K) and you’ll be dealing with many of those 500 HP monsters on the road. Mustang will still be at top as it traditionally has, being the best bang for the buck. I would like to see a new firebird rolling down the street though…

There is no point in producing two GM flagship ponycars. We will get the Camaro eventually, but it will be up to us to make "T/A" bodykits(see where I'm going here???) Give us the Camaro soon, and we'll take care of the rest. And the GTO is dead...it was a good idea, but the car looks too much like a 4 cylinder sedan to go over well, and is very overpriced for its target market. And also...for real F-body fans, we know that GM was obliged to build a majority of Camaros and Firebirds at the Canada assembly plant. They killed the F-body...closed the plant...demolished the plant...and then announced the resurrection of the Camaro? Coincidence?
I myself have owned SEVERAL f-bodies, and currently own a 2000 WS6 T/A, 77 S/E T/A(Bandit, as some call him), and share ownership on a 76 "first year special edition" T/A. I even used to own a 2001 10th Anniversary Firehawk Trans Am...thank you SLP! I am a professional and a "shade-tree" mechanic/bodyman as a hobby.
So, we'll get the Camaro. It will be up to us to retro or upgrade the car as we see fit. And I'm a Trans Am fan for life...even have a "screaming chicken" tatoo to boot!

I own a 79 Trans Am S/E and a 69 Firebird custom, I love both cars, they still turn heads to this day, I would love to own a 2008 Trans Am S/E..Build it.

Lets face it GM, the real reason your F-Bodys failed was because the 4th Gen vehicles were ugly, by 2002, they were starting to look better, however, by then it was too late. You dealt with the problem in the wrong way, instead of dropping the F-Body line, which disappointed alot of your followers, you should have fired the designers. Now you have a chance to redeam yourselves in 2008, Build the Camaro and Firebird Trans Am, but stick with the retro 69 styling, and we guarantee you, we will buy them, ignoring the Mustang and the Challenger....Dont disappoint us.

GM. Do not contemplate. BUILD IT! Bring back one of the most popular muscle cars in the world. This car has always been my favorite car. I have only owned one used Firebird but plan to collect at least two or three and would love to buy a brand new one. I'm not too big a fan of retro styling, but I like what I have seen so far. Build this car with no hesitation.

at $3 gasoline... anything with less than 30mpg will become a hard sell... has anyone noticed the drop in the price of SUVs? the steep energy costs may force a new presidency to raise fuel and emission standards... which may make this new model an increasingly difficult sell...

all that being said..

I have had 4 firebirds... of three different generations... settling on the two I own now.. first gen and last gen... my two personal favorites.. I would buy a 5th gen in a HEARTBEAT! a 5th gen Firebird ... not a camaro... ... a FIREBIRD!... I would sell my 40mpg honda in an INSTANT to drive a 5th gen... if they only existed...

GM would be foolish not to resurrect the FIREBIRD, The name implies it!!!
The FIREBIRD (Phoenix) is from ancient mythology, a fiery bird that rose from the ashes!!! Hence the (Firebird hood decal)
They would have to be nuts not to build one, NOT A NEW GTO. In the past the two have always shared the same platform just different engines back in the 60s to the 70s. If they do bring it back let Pontiac have there own version of the new GM engines, like in the 60s-70s. Then bring back the 6.6L Firebird Trans-Am BANDIT EDITION, and if you really want to go over the top figure out how to put some T-Tops on that thing!!
I cant wait to see the new Camaro on the streets, the new Challenger, and maybe a Pontiac Trans-Am???, How about a Firebird Formula as a lesser model??

From A Loyal Mustang lovers point of view, bring on some competition already!! It would be simply awesome
To see the reto old school pony cars goin at it once again in the streets!!

I sure hope the FIREBIRD does come back...I've always loved that car. the Camaro is okay ,but I CANT STAND THE MUSTANG. It does not have the look of a sports car . it sits too high off the ground , like an SUV,and has a chopped off back end, like someone at Ford was asleep when it was designed. the Firebird is low and sleek by comparision. As the owner of a white FIREBIRD 6 speed Formula Convertible ( My 3rd Firebird ),I get jealous stares from Mustang owners all the time . They KNOW which car looks better,,, and it's faster to boot.So Pontiac, now that you've canned the GTO (it's just as well, no one wanted it anyway} stop trying to go after BMW owners and BRING BACK THE 'BIRD !! Oh, and one more thing... stop listing the TRANS AM like it's a separate model or somthing...THE TRANS AM IS A FIREBIRD !!! always has been... always will be...Don't believe it ? read your factory stickers, boys and girls...the car's official name is the PONTIAC FIREBIRD TRANS AM !!! DOES CHEVY LIST THE Z28 as a separate model from the CAMARO ??

I think it's about time the major car companies have seen the light and have made the decision to manufacturer newer versions of their old classics. The problem with today's cars is they all look the same -- no style. Ford did a great job with reinventing the Mustang. I'm a Trans Am girl and I am very much looking forward to the new 2008 Pontiac Trans Am! - Susan

Looks to much like a MUSTANG a CAMARA should still
look like a CAMARA. I hope they don't go in this direction with the car. They need to remake
the CAMARO and my all time favorite FIREBIRD TRANS AM
and I hope when they do it you can still recognize it as being a FIREBIRD

i have an 04 cavalier. its ok but its FRONT WHEEL DRIVE. i hate the fact that you got me used to v-8 rear wheel peel then basically cut me off. build the new trans-am. I WILL BUY ONE!!!!!! PLEASE dont make me put a ford mustang in the driveway. its against my religeon. id consider a new camaro but my passion for pontiac keeps me awake for hours at night, thinking of my next mod on my 79 formula. also why not make the smaller cars optional front or rear wheel by custom order? you might be surprised how many mid 20s guys hate front wheel drive. give us a choice. give us the trans-am.

Ok. GM will have to keep the price down. This is what has killed them in the past. The Mustang has stayed AFFORDABLE and stylish. That was the problem with the last Gen. 'bird and Camaro and the current GTO. Under $25,000 for a V6 model. Under $30,000 for a Z/28 or TA. Give them a manual trans. standard and the Auto. as the option. We want these cars. Just go back to the original idea behind them in the first place. Fast, fun, sleek and affordable. Yes, we will come. Quickly.

Yes bring back the Firebird!! I fell in-love with them from the moment I first saw one in Smokey and the bandit and Knight Rider. I've always preferred the Firebird styling over the Camaro not to mention the huge Pheonix on the hood and TRANS AM written on all sides. I agree with the majority of views, the Pontiac range now is bland and the GTO hasn't sold as well as Pontiac where hopeing.

The Firebird has a lagacy behind it and a very strong following, if you build this car with a similar look they'll sell like hot cakes and I will sell vital body parts to buy one!

Terrific news if true. I'm going to need a new toy in a few years as my '01 Trans-Am (my 3rd Trans-Am) will be past due for replacement. The GTO just never excited me, looks too much in my eyes like a sedan (and when it comes to buying a sedan, I'll keep to BMW). Bought the wife a new Vibe as an anniversary gift a few weeks ago (she is a Toyota salesperson... who much prefers the Vibe appearance), and we plan to stay with Pontiacs as long as they build a quality product. What I'd really like to see is a true Mid-Size BMW fighter 4-door with RWD, room for 2 carseats, manual transmissions for both 6 cylinders and V-8's, and refined engines... a Caddilac CTS-lite!

I am also a Trans Am addict! I own a 2002 WS6 Trans AM. I am 47 years old and ever since I bought my first car, I fell in love with these cars. I have never owned any other kind of car. (5 Firebirds and 2 Trans Am. I was so sad when you stopped making them. This Trans AM WS6 is the best looking car in my opinion. I LOVE the hood style. Please come back with these cars, and don't forget the T-Tops!! Thanks for making driving FUN!!!
                      Your Trans AM addict,

This must be greatest idea I have ever heard, no wonder GM may be keeping this under wraps. The Camaro, Firebird and Trans Am have always essentially been the same car with some stylistic variation, of which I believe the Trans Am is by far the hottest of the three (take a load of this link and see if you don't agree: http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/3216/834/1600/SP32-20060509-074522.jpg )
Given the Firebird and Trans Am would share at least 95 percent commonality in parts with the Camaro, it would cost GM next to nothing to build all of them. And I say BUILD IT!!!

This car needs to happen. The idea is not impractical. Pontiac is all about "awesomeness" they said. Why not add a little muscle to the brand with a retro meets new rear wheel drive v-8 monster. We all miss the Bird and Im sure were all willing to buy. They've got the car, money, and support. If they would just stop being scared of what all the hippy mommy boys who drive foriegn krap think they could take Pontiac to a new level. BUILD IT NOW!!!

I own a 2004 GTO with 6 spd. I love it!! I owned a 79 T/A 400 4Spd. several years back and wish I had never sold it. The '04 GTO is a faster and better car overall but nothing compares to the style of the T/A. The 77 - 78 are my favorite. I do agree that the GTO is not the best looking car. Pontiac did not want the retro look with it. They wanted it to look like it would if it had always been built. That they did do. Look at the Grand Am and Grand Prix. I get many people admiring the car and comment on its looks and performance. I drag race it in 100% stock form and it runs 13.65 @ 103.9 MPH. It handles like it is on rails and no rattles or squiks. Now if Pontiac will build an LS2 T/A with the retro look, I'll buy one! I still will have my GTO and love it too. Besides, my 14 year old (16 by then) would not mind driving the GTO if I got a T/A. I sure hope Pontiac builds the T/A. Make mine Black with the screaming chicken!!

The Camaro concept is nice and GM should definately bring this car back. It was a mistake to discontinue the Camaro and Firebird in the first place. I have seen a few of the concept Camaro revisions illustrating a Trans Am, very hot, very sexy, very mean. I don't know about you but I like it much better than the Camaro concept. With very few exceptions, the Trans Am has always been the best looking F-body though. A new Trans Am like that would bring a ton of people to Pontiac dealerships, me included (as will the Camaro to Chevy dealerships). But 2010 GM?? You knew you were going to discontinue the F-body well before 2002. You could have been working on a replacement a long time ago. What were you waiting for, a hot selling Mustang to motivate you? Guess What....
