GM is currently undergoing a global restructuring as it looks to increase its profit margins and offset the loses from its struggling European division.

The automaker's latest move to streamline its operations is a workforce realignment that will entail trimming a number of positions at its global research & development headquarters in Warren, Michigan.

"GM leadership recently notified employees working in its global R&D organization of plans to realign the organization's business structure," said GM spokesman Dan Flores. "These moves will enable the organization to better focus on commercializing customer-focused innovation in a more efficient and cost effective manner."

About 100 of the 400 R&D positions at the Tech Center will be eliminated, a source close to GM's plans told The Detroit News. The employees will have 30 days to apply for other positions at GM, and layoffs will begin in June for those unable to find work within the company.

"There will be some work reassigned to Warren from other parts of the organization," Flores said. "And there will be some work currently being done in Warren that will be discontinued or significantly streamlined."

Impacted salaried workers will receive separation packages, Flores stated.

GM will also close a research facility in Bangalore, India, according to the source. Approximately 90 workers there could be reassigned to positions at other locations.
