GM to detail Camaro, Zeta plant plans this week

08/19/2006, 3:47 PM

By admin

General Motors will announce on Monday that it will produce the 2009 Chevrolet Camaro at its assembly plant in Oshawa, Ontario, according to Canada’s the Globe and Mail. GM is also expected to announce details of how it will revamp the Oshawa facility to produce up to 500,000 rear-wheel-drive Zeta platform vehicles per year, the newspaper’s sources said. General Motors is widely expected to built a new Chevy Impala and Monte Carlo on the platform, as well as a new Buick sedan and Cadillac DTS. GM’s Bob Lutz has also said there are plans for a new GTO on the Zeta platform, but that vehicle could be built in Australia alongside a possible rear-wheel-drive Pontiac Grand Prix. We’ll keep you posted Monday as this story develops. They won’t stand a chance because the japanese are thinking rear wheel drive too. When their products come out they will be better packaged and more value for money.

GM will never learn. They are a bunch of followers and always will be. Just because Chrysler made such a sucess of the LX cars doesn’t mean that they will. Plus people are looking at the gas prices and buying with their wallets and minds not with their hearts. By the time these models come out, it will probably be about $5-a-gallon so you better have a back up plan in the way Chrysler will have Bluetec Diesels for the LXs.

Be innoovative, produce things that has people raving about the product not thinking its just another car.

Stuart, YOU are the follower, not GM. You’re following the Japanese with your closed mind and bias. The majority of people who actually need and/or want SUVs, pickups or sports cars are NOT looking at gas prices. If a sports car is your desire, you don’t give a rat’s ass about how much gas costs. Hybrid huggers like you do. As for your last comment, it just proves you’re an even bigger dumbass. This car has gotten three times the praise any of your hybrids have.

May have to build it in Canada as GM swore on a stack of bibles to the Quebec assembly plant union officials upon cloding the plant that they would never ever build cars called Camaro or Firebird again…the last F-bodies were built in PQ.

Google “GM, CAW, Camaro, plant closing” or something like that for details.

Love the car but it’s too long of a wait.

Hey Stuart if you don’t like the car don’t buy it, that’s the great thing about capitalism they will keep making any model as long as it is profitable. I’m sure you’ll be happy driving the miniature (advanced) cars you find over there that some if not most could not be sold as is here. That’s due to pollution regulations or safety ones. Those great diesels that make up for all their shortcomings in pollution, the main reason cars here don‘t get the mileage they do over there is their size and weight. After going to Europe I know why they are so conscious about pollution, their probably the worst offenders they just don’t report it or grossly underestimate it. The way some Europeans talk you’d swear they all drive 100 thousand $ Mercedes tanks that get 50 miles to the gallon. The fact is a good amount don’t have cars and the other good majority drive motorcycles (strike that I meant scooters) or mini cooper sized vehicles. BTW the comparable US models are on average 1/2 the price so if I’m paying 2 times the money I better be getting a better product. Anyhow can’t we all just get along, the great thing about living in the free world (mainly thanks to the US and UK) is that we have the freedoms to make these choices and insult each other if we want to. Now that being said can we all tone it down a notch. Thanks, at least I’ll get the impression were all older than 10.

Stuart, I’m not going to break out in the childish insults but you really should check your facts first.

Doing a simple comparison with what a Zeta platform Holden Commodore SS (with 400 or so HP) costs in Australian dollars $60000 including on road costs for a full optioned car. Now lets take a look at your bmw m3 example which according to the brochure I have here costs $156000, a ninety six thousand difference. Maybe AUD$60 on fuel a week and it would ooh take you only 30 years to reclaim the difference.

Also the Zeta platform isn’t American it’s Australian…

I Love it when Stuart says he owns his own house like he’s referring to it as a crayon, and comparing cars that are 3 times or more of the cost. I’m sure he and the bank owns the house or maybe it was a hand me down like most properties tend to be in Europe. Wait, wait it sounds better as inherited. Anyhow he’s entitled to his opinion the problem is that he is not comparing apples to apples. BTW Stuart people tend to like foreign things (makes them feel different) . IE unless you live in Germany witch tend to like their own cars only (superiority complex same thing that got their butts kicked twice, they still tend to tell the world what to do especially after being the direct cause of dozens of millions of dead they think they know better now. The rest of Europe tends to drive a good variety of cars from different country. Oh yes Europe is not one country.

People have become accustomed to more expensive fuel. Your average middle and upper class American will not sacrifice their comfortable, stylish 18 mpg sedan for a BASE model 30 mpg civic in order to save $600-700 per year. $1.92 more per day, about the cost of a soda, in order to fuel a fast comfortable car. “Your” Evo gets about 18 mpg in urban driving. The last Camaro got about 19mpg in the same environment, with a four speed auto and no cylinder deactivation, and as I said before there are V6s for the cheapasses and the truly frugal. The only small car DCX has is the caliber, that’s it, one.

Stuart glad to see your cutting back n the profanity.

first- in one of you quotes you compared the CAMARO (that is how it’s spelled). To
“the BMW M3. The M3 is the sort of car the American manufacturers only dream of building but never will.” MSRP: $48,900 – $56,600 City Mileage: 16 mpg Hwy Mileage: 22-23 mpg.

Like I said earlier 2 times the cost should be 2 times the better.

“If Euro cars are so trash then why do you American love buying them. Ferrari Enzo is Italian therefore European, does it make that trash? I can bet you only retard Americans like anonymous will take the Camaro over the Enzo or even the M3.”

Your Joking right? Comparing a Ferrari to Camaro? I could buy a top of the line Camaro (when they come out) for every day of the week and still have plenty left over. Add a supercharger/turbocharger and I’m sure all seven will give the Enzo a run for it’s money if not beat it.

Seriously don’t change the subject and say you were talking about your Evo. The Evo is already forced induction that runs about the same price if not 4 grand more than the Camaro will be, and it’s butt UGLY. Looks just like a car half the price and 15 years old body style with a ricer bat wing ,and I mean 15 year old not retro.

firesq, the evo is MUCH more functional than the camaro. The camaro is a joke compared to the evo, put a stock evo vs. a stock camaro on a circuit, whos gonna get a better lap time? the evo. oh yeah it seats 5, its got 4 doors, which means i can carry my wife and 2 kids comfortably…oh yeah its much safer on the road too, thanks to my nice sophisticated AWD system

“The Evo is already forced induction” …. so?? Turbos are great! The evo has a 2.0litre 4 cylinder engine… the camaro is gonna have 6.0L v8. thats 3 times the size.. oh yeah the evo outperforms it too.

“Looks just like a car half the price and 15 years old body style with a ricer bat wing ,and I mean 15 year old not retro.” If you were a real driving enthusiast then you would know function before form.

It outperforms a car that has not been built yet? Wow. The current GTO goes o-100 in 11.5 compared to 12.5 for the Evo MR. The Camaro will seat four which is what most people use, and every winter in Pittsburgh I see Subaru’s and SUVs under steering off the road,so that AWD safety argument is mute, especially if you’re an “enthusiast”. The engine will be three times the size but still deliver the same or better fuel economy based upon the stats gathered from the old models and current line up. The engine will have useable power and TORQUE throughout the entire rev range, not just when you rev its guts out. The Camaro will probably offer better luxury and more refinement as well( can’t believe I said “refinement” and “Camaro” in the same sentence). The Evo’s suspension is rock hard, I hope you and your family have a comprehensive dental plan for rattled loose teeth and access to one hell of a chiropractor.

Have enjoyed the comments from Stuart. Glad that he likes the EVO. I also find it comical that he thinks his opinion is the only one that counts. You know what they say about opinions…

As for the Camaro being late to the party, well, that’s GM for you. The same was said about the HHR. “Oh, Chrysler’s had the PT Cruiser for 5 years, so nobody will buy an HHR.” “Oh, retro is dead.” Well, I guess Chevy proved them wrong.

As for fuel economy, apparently Stuart isn’t familiar with the Corvette’s mileage, which is rated at 28 mpg highway (standard model) and 26 mpg (Z06). Not bad for 400 HP and 505 HP, respectively. And this is without Active Fuel Management, which the Camaro is sure to have. So 30 mpg HWY is not out of the question for a 400 HP Camaro.

Oh look! The 2006 EVO can’t beat the Corvette’s highway mileage figures. If the Camaro is a gas guzzler, then his EVO is, too.

Shoot…the best I could do on the HWY with my 1981 Toyota Tercel, with a 1.5 liter 4 banger with 70 HP, a 2-bbl carb, and 5 speed manual was 28 MPG. Even that beats his vaunted EVO.

As for AWD and the safety benefits, well, perhaps for idiots who think it’s for 55 mph blasts down a snow-covered road or 75 mph runs on a two-lane, curve-filled road in the rain. I’ve driven in plenty of snow and rain with several FWD cars and have no complaints. Would AWD be better? Yes and no, but it greatly depends on the driver.

Welcome back, Camaro!

(Oh…my family having owned such greats as a 1965 GTO convertible, a 1964 Malibu SS, and a 1974 Trans Am, I guess I am a little biased).
