Cobalt SS is an amazing little car. 13.9 in the quarter? Put in a chip to boot power to 290hp/340ft-lb.

Civic? lame. Corolla S? Please. Mazdaspeed 3 only decent competitor, but dang, they're ugly.

Steve walks warily down the street, with the brim pulled way down low.

GM really needs to find another name for the high-performance Cobalt. Not "SS."

That FWD thing they called an Impala also doesn't deserve SS designation.

Ring-Taxi: the Cobalt was never a POS. It's just not interesting to many people.

zoomzoomer: "The whole proliferation of SS was just GM grabbing at straws." you're right.

RaineMan: "It competes nicely with the Civic Si." yeah, THAT's a high bar.

livelyjay: "Another thing which is unfortunate, is you can’t lock these cars up and think they will grab top dollar down the road. They are compact cars with a suspension package and go fast parts thrown on the engine. They aren’t going to fetch good money down the road like a rare sports car would (think ZR-1 and GT-R 40 years from now)."

RaineMan: "You want to know the really nice thing about the Cobalt SS? It's not a Civic Si. The bad thing about the Cobalt SS? It's not a GTi, Mazdaspeed3 or WRX.

You want to know the really nice thing about the Cobalt SS? You can't get 0% APR financing on a Civic Si, GTi, MS3, WRX, or Evo.

Be honest here folks... if you bought one of these amped-up econoboxes odds are you don't give a crap whether it is a rattle-trap or not. Hell, I put SOLID engine and transmission mounts in my 06 to get even better performance. It shakes like a NASCAR but when I push the go pedal it does one thing right... that is shit-n-get. Ken knows exactly what I'm talking about.

These cars are American Muscle to the truest historical sense of the term... put the most horsepower in the smallest package and set it loose on the streets... if you want creature comforts go buy a Camry, I'll make sure to wave as I blow by you in the left lane.

Stick them in the garage? 1st its dillusional to think these will be collectible. 2nd isnt the point of a cheap very fast car to drive the living crap out of it. I love all the cars mentioned, MazdaSpd3, Cobalt SS, Neon SRT-4, WRX, EVO, VW GTI and the Miata. They are affordable, durable and cheap to fix, when they inevitable break under the strain of fun.

i can pretty much guarantee you'll be better off 10 years from now if you buy a cobalt's-worth of ford stock than a cobalt...as a mazdaspeed 3 fan, this piece of news makes me chuckle just a little bit...if they killed off the 2010 'speed i definitely wouldn't buy an '09 to stick in the garage for resale, but i'd hurry to the dealer and buy one of the dwindling stock they have just to get my kicks until the economy picks up and we have more fun cars to choose from again...

02WRXPSM, do you mean as the Cobalt SS passes the WRX on the track it rattles and gives you the thrill of being on the edge of control yet still holds it's line?

Unfortunately the Cobalt SS will die in a year or two as well. Another thing which is unfortunate, is you can't lock these cars up and think they will grab top dollar down the road. They are compact cars with a suspension package and go fast parts thrown on the engine. They aren't going to fetch good money down the road like a rare sports car would (think ZR-1 and GT-R 40 years from now). The turbo Cobalt SS is a great performing car based on SCCA performance. I can't comment on the car itself because I've never driven one. I am sad to see the sedan version die, because some people want performance and convenience of 4 doors (I have a Mazdaspeed Protege). The sedan just doesn't look as good as the coupe, so I can see why they are killing it (and come to think of it, I have never seen an SS sedan on the road).

RaineMan: I've got an easy answer for you -- no one who wants to go as fast as an WRX, STI or EVO will take you wants to do so in a rattling tin box that always feels like it is on the edge of control

I'm guessing they were both ditched for the same reason they ditch anything- they weren't selling. Well that and the fact, as many have alluded to, who even knew they existed (but hey, everyone knows there's a Malibu hybrid even though it doesn't sell in any substantial volume either). GM is so misguided.

Now let's talk about this buy one now and reap the profits later scenario. If it hadn't been for OPEC in the 70's we wouldn't be having this conversation because no one wants to miss the second coming of the 60's muscle car era. News flash kids: neither the Cobalt or HHR even in SS guise are muscle cars. Why not throw a Mazdaspeed 3 in the garage? It's twice the car as either GM example is dynamically. So what makes the Cobalt so special? Is it because it's a Chevy? Is it because it's not Japanese?

Let's look at this from an historical perspective. If you pulled out a showroom stock late 80's vintage Shelby Daytona from your collection and threw it on e-bay what do you think it would fetch? If you got the original msrp I'd be surprised and that was a pretty hot car in its day. What I think you're all speculating is that the end of cars like this is near and that we'll all be driving electric hamster wheels sooner rather than later. Couple that with the exclusivity of a limited production run and it just has to appreciate, right? Wrong.

If you want one of these just get one and enjoy it. Only drive it on sunny days and keep the mileage down if you so desire and in 10 or 20 years you may have the nicest one left in your state or province. I look through classified sites all the time where guys say that about their ride. Whatever. It may make yours worth 5 or ten times what the average running example is worth but 5 or 10 times f*ck all is unfortunately still f*ck all.

They're ditching the 4-door SS? Why??!!??

The 4-door makes tons more sense than the Coupe. It competes nicely with the Civic Si, and is nearly as fast as the WRX and Evo while being a good bit cheaper. I see tons more sports sedans than I do coupes... they're so much more practical. The one thing I don't like about my 06 Cobalt SS is the lack of useful space.

Chevy has absolutely no sense anymore.

==>>Talk all the crap yall want, but i guarantee you people this. And think about it. The 260hp 4door Cobalt SS goes like stink, almost as much as the 2door. But with it only been made for just 2 years, take one and lock it in a garage for some years and watch how collectible or sought after its gonna be. Just watch. Same with the SRT-4 Neons. Those cars are fast as heck and despite the fact that dodge sold a pretty good batch of them, lock one in mint condition in a garage. Years from now after a good bit of them are died out from teenagers crashing them not being able to handle the intense speed that they're capable of after tuning, the fact will remain that they went like stink, were sold for only 3years and are gonna be worth a pretty good bit of money. Just Watch.

GM needs to find a way to bring the Cruze to market faster! I'm not gonna miss either one of these. The HHR is a PT Cruiser you can't see out off (I rented one once). And the Cobalt? Swing and Miss! Although I do have to give GM credit for selling some go fast parts for them.
