General Motors says it will formally launch its best-known brand, Chevrolet, in South Korea next year. To formally introduce the bowtie brand to Koreans, Chevrolet displayed a Camaro at the Busan Motor Show in the country’s second largest city.
“The introduction of Chevrolet will enable us to provide our customers an array of exciting new vehicles from the brand’s global lineup, giving them more driving options,†said GM Daewoo Auto and Technology President and CEO Mike Arcamone in a statement released to the media.
For nearly 40 years, GM has had a strong presence in Korea – initially by providing Daewoo with vehicle platforms and, in 2001, by acquiring the then-bankrupt Daewoo Automotive Group. Yet the automaker has not officially sold Chevrolet-badged vehicles in Korea, even though the market has long designed small vehicles sold under the bowtie brand in other markets. GM Daewoo’s Korean operations are responsible for the Chevrolet Cruze, Aveo (Aveo RS show car pictured) and Spark, among other models sold globally.
Earlier this month, GM opened its Korean design studio in Seoul’s trendy Gangnam design district.
