General Motors Chairman Bob Lutz may think that global warming is “a crock,” but GM CEO Rick Wagoner made it clear at a press event Tuesday that GM doesn’t share Lutz’s views. Instead, Wagoner believes that global warming is a very real issue facing the planet and that automakers must take action.
“The comments weren’t coming out of our company,” Wagoner told The Detroit News at the event.
Wagoner continued by saying that average temperatures around the world are on the rise, and while there is no definitive evidence linking cars to global warming, it’s GM’s goal to reduce its vehicles’ CO2 emissions.
Lutz defended his stance on global warming on GM’s corporate blog last month, saying “My beliefs are mine and I have a right to them.” However, Lutz insists that he shares GM’s stance on “the removal of cars and trucks from the environmental equation.”

Agreed injunraiv. Believe it or not and I’m probably going to get attacked by I can only imagine who on this comment but GM back in the 90’s was the only Automotive company that had the capability of mass producing an electric car. The EV1. My dad test drove it and was cooperatively working with the engineering team, and he said that it was ready to hit the line. So why didn’t it? What happened? Why did GM take back all the EV1’s that they had lent out and leased to private research institutions, colleges, etc? Where did all the EV1’s go?
I may be a conspirarist but it all has to do with economics. Back in the early 90’s gas was cheap, like when the Ford Explorer and SUV’s started really becoming popular, fuel efficiency was no longer a concern, plus I wouldn’t be surprised if there were some back room deals made with the oil companies or whoever. Anyways once again GM screwed themselves, because if they had followed through on it then they’d be the leader of alternative powered vehicles.

Geez, I’d rather err on the side of saying Global Warming is real because once the balance is thrown out of control, it is not going to swing back the other way. It is not just the amount of ice caps melting or the retreat of the Arctic glaciers, these are just some evidence to show the world IS warming, whether it is part of the geological cycle or that man made green house gas has something to do with it.
You are just ignorant if you only believe with direct evidence. Large scale geological events do not usually show up overnight, but hundreds maybe thousand of years. Smaller more sensitive events such as the rate the glaciers are retreating thus serve as warning signs that something larger is happening! When you do see the damage of global warming with the backing of statistical evidence, it is too late to do anything. Is that the kind of world you’d like to leave to your offsprings? Of course, most of us, if not all will likely not be alive hundred years from now, so we couldn’t careless? But how selfish is that position!

So even if you believe in GW, why not invest more heavily in ethanol fuels and nuclear power and breeder reactors. Ethanol produced from cellulose with Nuclear-generated electricity as the catalyst has a net carbon penalty of zero. Plus cellulosic ethanol can come from any kind of plant matter. Those lawn clippings you have? Ethanol; all the corn husks left after harvest? ethanol, etc. On a large scale its cheap, very high octane (100+ for E85), and you can get drunk off it! Its win win. Make your cars run like Bender.

We’ve all weighed in on the Global Warming issue before. I like Heart64’s proposal, as global warming has become a bit of a misnomer.
Citing the fact that you froze your ass off this winter in Chicago (I’m in the Chicago ‘burbs) as proof that there is no global warming just highlights the fact that you’ve chosen not educate yourself on the depth of the problem.
Global climate change is complex, and I’m not the expert to teach anyone on this topic, but it’s probably a fair analogy to say that greenhouse gases don’t necessarily make the Earth a constantly-on microwave oven, but more of a big styrofoam container. When it’s very cold, it stays cold, when it’s very warm, it stays warm. Yes, there will be fluctuations but “global pollution” is having an effect on the extremes. On a geological time scale, the mean temperature is still probably rising.
But set that aside, this LLN article confirms that Lutz is a putz, when it comes to towing the company line. Lee Iacocca, for one, has long said that the rejuvenation of the U.S. auto industry will require government help. For Lutz to **** on the environment when it’s already a political issue that’s here to stay is sure to cause great concern at GM, especially when GM has already committed a lot of resources to developing hybrids, etc.
And frylock, I predict that there will be an economics lesson for us all in the coming years. What CAFE will likely do is highlight exactly why Americans like their big trucks, and it may be because they’ve always been available. CAFE is going to change the supply.
Americans have proved that they’re a hearty bunch. When gas prices skyrocketed, all GM companies started their “employee pricing” sale program, and GM found that big trucks and SUVs still flew off the lots.
The question is: what if back then, all those big truck and SUVs had been replaced with smaller, but more fuel efficient vehicles? Would GM still have sold so many, particularly if no one else offered big trucks and SUVs?
I predict, “yes.” Ultimately, in achieving a healthy supply-and-demand balance, I think consumers’ demand is more elastic and will change more easily to meet supply, then the other way around.

I don’t think we can know for sure what would have sold and at the time GM was in no position to mess with what works. Now with desirable smaller cars, class-leading mid-sizes, the Cobalt having one of its best years despite being due for a redesign GM can rely less on GMT900. I’m certainly not against smaller more efficient vehicle… as long they don’t eliminate or castrate the GMT900s. Choice is a good thing. Forcing me out of a type of vehicle I like is not. I was already forced out of the B-body Wagons and I’m still pissed at GM for that. At least I can rest easy that pickup-trucks are a necessity, not a luxury so they’ll always be around. And making my Suburban off of a pickup chassis really doesn’t cost them much.

frylock350,
I agree that GM would prefer not to mess with what works, but the question on all car makers’ minds is: what will happen when the legislature tinkers with what has worked?
The GMT900’s will still be around, but the CAFE regs may force GM to divert sales to smaller, more fuel efficient utility vehicles to offset the fuel economy of the GMT900 “giants”. Say the volume of GMT900’s drops by 75%… you can still get your GMT900, but as long as the demand is fairly constant, you’ll be paying a much higher premium for your 2020 Suburban.
The question that GM wants to know the answer to is: if you don’t feel like paying a high price for one of the few Suburbans kickin’ around, will you buy one of GM’s more fuel efficient alternatives or will you buy a used vehicle off a used car lot? If consumers ran for the used-car-lot hills at the sight of pricey replacements for cars/SUVs they already own, that WILL get GM’s attention.
Another way of looking at it: when the B-body wagons went bye-bye, did you buy used wagons, or did you buy the latest and greatest of this or that off the showroom floor?
I think that the American consumer, by and large, will adjust to the supply of vehicles that the carmakers put on their lots, even if CAFE regs dictate what those are to a little, or even a large, degree. Consumers like buying new cars, with warranties, and new tech, and new frills and thrills. It may mean that those who actually don’t need a pick-up truck are now not going to buy one.

What the heck does dictionary.com has to to with “climate?” It’s the concept, not the dictionary meaning. Heck most newscaster on TV use these words interchangeably, does that make it right? Weather deals with short term (an by short it is more like the last 50 – 100 years once there was records) in predicting the next storm. Climate deals with millions of years that went back to the pre-human times. There is no statistical records for it, it is evidence by examining rock layers that was deposited due to geological event. These evidence is not apparent until much later. And go sleep with your World Meterological Society, who did NASA send to Mars for the studies of whether there was water on the red planet? And what are the first four classes listed? CLIMATE CHANGE! If you think all Geologist study is rock, you are gravely mistaken. What goes up must come down, and be deposited so looking at mineral deposit, rock layer can predict climate change (Long Term). I assume you are smarter than Yale professors too, so have a go at it.
And “Geo” means earth, “Logy” roughly translates to knowledge, and the atmosphere is part of it, so is the water cycle (Geomorphology), which forms cloud and when deposited in large amount on the surface, can form rivers and streams and cause erosion. But you are not interested in that and was never interested in it but YET you can so definitely tell everyone you KNOW global warming is a crock when you don’t even know who studies them.
