GM to offer Reconfigurable Performance Display on select ‘09 models

General Motors has announced that it will be offering its Reconfigurable Performance Display on a select few 2009 models. The dealer-installed option will list for $295 and will be available on Cobalt and HHR SS models, although the option will likely also extend to Pontiac Solstice GXP and Saturn Sky Redline buyers, too.
As the name implies, the Reconfigurable Performance Display consists of a small LCD display that can display a number of different performance data sets, and is also highly customizable. The device is capable of displaying battery voltage, boost pressure, instant horsepower and torque readouts, cam phase angle and even has a built in g-meter, thermometer and barometer.
The Reconfigurable Performance Display also controls the car’s traction control and features a few other trick options, such as a programmable shift light.
No word on when the Reconfigurable Performance Display will be available on other GM vehicles, but we’re sure it’s coming. Until then, it seems like the perfect way to make a baby Nissan GT-R out of your 2009 Cobalt SS.

It’s about time this became public knowledge. GM Performance and GM Tuner Source have been touting the usefulness of this display for some time. So far I know it works on the LNF engine… so anything with the LNF should be able to use this little toy.

This thing is pretty cool. The unit itself is ugly looking but it has so many useful features. Like shift lights, Competition/Launch mode, TCS selections, different gauge appearance & colors, boost, lateral G’s, A/F ratio, spark advance, outside temp, batt voltage, and alot more. All for a $295 factory option.
Yeah as of now only offered on the HHR SS & Cobalt SS but would be cool if it found its way into the Solstice GXP & Sky RL…

Does it say how long you have until the car is going to need service? I though every GM car has like a preset number of miles it is supposed to break down at.

I hope it includes a depreciation meter too, so you can watch your GM product loose value faster than most other brands on the road.

I’m going to have to drive a Cobalt SS one of these days. My ‘95 dohc Neon is still a blast, but with the LNF, launch control, its Nurburgring record, and now this, the Cobalt has almost become the reigning candidate for ultimate sleeper.

You can get the same info from any car from a Scan Guage II for $160. It plugs into the ODBII port and gives you everything from fuel economy to coolant temperature. Others have developed acceleration testing programs for the iPhone and the Wii. At least GM’s trying.

It’s kind of cool, really. With all of the onboard information that cars now carry it’s a wonder that we can’t access this type of information on more cars in general.

The Cobalt SS is quite a little sleeper… especially once you pull the park bench wing off the back.

You can also get a Dashhawk & it’ll do pretty much the same thing. Same thing as global_lightning suggested.
The fact that GM is actually offering something like this on a sub 20k sport compact car like the Cobalt SS is almost hard to believe.
& for all the haters show me an option where any other auto company is offering something like this on their products around the same price. You won’t.
With the level of technology that the Cobalt SS has with its direct Injected, VVT, twin-scrolled turbo, BOSCH tuned 2.0L 4cyl, No lift shift feature, & competition/launch mode, you won’t find any of that in another car at the Cobalt’s price.
It’s just too bad it’s in a Cobalt right?

I believe Chrysler offers a performance display on some of its SRT cars, but not color like the GM thing.
