Aside from badges, there is littler differentiating today’s GMC Sierra from the Chevrolet Silverado. However, that won’t be the case with General Motors’ next-generation of full-size pickup trucks as the Detroit automaker is planning to move the Sierra further up-scale than its Chevrolet platform mate.
Although the Sierra is technically positioned as a premium alternative to the Silverado, only about $500 separate comparable models. Moreover, incentives are about the same on both trucks, so transaction prices are also nearly identical.
In order to put more distance between the two models, GM is planning to give the next-generation Sierra a longer list of standard features than its Silverado brother. Those features will be accompanied by a higher prices.
“I think you will see equipment and models attacked very differently because we should,†Mark Reuss, GM president of North America, said. “If we are going to carry two brands, we are going to make them pay their way.â€
Reuss added that styling changes will also help differentiate the two trucks, but admits there are only so many styling changes that can be made to a pickup. “A pickup truck is a pickup truck,†he said.
Look for the next-generation GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado to bow sometime in 2013.
