@Bryce, you are a good man; the automotive industry needs more like you versus what they have today. You may think I want the US to fail in the automotive arena, quite the contrary, I know they can do much better. I do believe that GM, in particular, needs to reorganize a bit to make things happen faster. And if I recall you were interested in how the public perception influenced bankruptcies? The same perception influences car buying that is the reason the lone XLR sitting on a lot of imports did not fare well.

"It's ironic bitching over a small increase in 2008 prices. It's business. Prices increase on everything sold from time to time. Big deal."

Yea I wondered exactly why it made the news?

F451, we would take in a CTS any day. Imports don't move that well here, considering import shoppers don't typically come to a domestic dealer for pre-owned models. My opinion is that it's a combination of market conditions and a dealership's ability to sell. You ought to get buy-bids from some Cadillac dealers. I think you'll have more luck.

@Bryce, my vehicles are impeccable when sold; highly maintained to what some of the service techs consider beyond normal. I have had many a mechanic come out just to see who owns the vehicle and thank me for having an engine bay that looks showroom new to work on and under. The latest to sell is our third daily driver for when company is around and that is our CTS. It will be replaced most likely with a Mercedes C class as the size is what drew us to the CTS (neither of us actually prefer a four-door, but need one occasionally), and what is currently drawing us to the Mercedes. No sentimentality involved as we looked at the new CTS (I'm not convinced, but the wife would have moved had they taken in our CTS that looks like new, the Mercedes dealer is not remotely interested in it as a trade). There is a high-end used car lot on the way to our residence that I stop by to chat with the owner occasionally. All the vehicles are high-mileage, and he makes no qualms about it. All are high-end imports; he has no problem moving them. About two months ago he placed a black Cadillac XLR on the lot, but he told me he would not do it again—it is still sitting there, and it actually has low miles on it. The GM branding is simply not where it was in the world players, and no amount of GM propaganda will make it so. GM has to rebuild its branding...it will not come overnight. The Corvette is the singular stellar automobile in the GM lineup; it actually has a true legacy.

In reality if one thinks like the Toyota-fans on here then a new Camry made in the U.S.A, without legacy cost and a union to deal with should be 25 to 30% less then an equal sized dometic? But it is not, usually sticker for around the same or higher. Now who's the one ripping off the consumer?

F451, we don't take trades for sentimental value. If the vehicle is unlikely to sell, the reason is the pre-owned shopper is unlikely to buy it. What have you been told to sell on your own?

It is a mute point since no one in right mind pays the sticker for domestic anyway. 1% price increase will not be noticed by general public and craftsman on the sale floor screw up customers on backend financing anyway. Dealers don't mind giving car away at cost. Moneys are made on financing.

^ i dont know i have always just given my used cars away to a family member for free when i am ready to buy another car, sure it costs me a little more in the end but it saves the less fortunate family members a lot of money. and i usually buy pre owned 1 year old cars anyways, just as good at a waaaaaaaaaaaaay better price.

@ Bryce, I have already supported American car manufacturers waaaaaay beyond the call of duty. Now, it is time for American car manufacturers to start upping their end versus me carrying their sloppiness, lack of addressing customer needs savvy, etc., etc., etc., around for decades. The pathetic thing is when you go back to the American dealership where you purchased your automobile from to trade it in for another, and they tell you they don't want it, and that you would be better off selling it to a private party (oh yeah, I know you know what I am talking about, as do many others). I have never had this issue with my foreign automobiles. I know American automobiles manufacturers can do better—now they just have to "do better!"

hateful83, there's no irony in GM raising its pricing.

F451, start paying more for pre-owned GM vehicles. Until then, appreciate the savings.

Don't get me wrong here, I'm a fan of GM. Like I said before, I feel like GM is really the only domestic automaker currently on the right track. Strangely enough, I like the new malibu so much that I might buy it. At any rate, it's kind of ironic to think that they're raising prices in the wake of the UAW thing. The reality is that they're dumping more of that money into the engineering of the vehicles, which is good. Truely, I could care less that they're raising prices, it happens every year, with every car company, and basicly everything. ( and no cts, I don't expect prices to drop, although I'd like my paycheck #'s to rise you know )

One, the cost savings negotiated in the UAW contract don't take effect until 2010.

Two, the cost of steel is an inflationary issue, not corporate greed.

Three, GM has many brands that consistently rank at or near the top in reliability surveys.

Four, I hope they aren't charging more for the Corvette. Its body is glassfibre.

(How 1115's statement reads when edited for bullshit!)No 1115 is not the devil but his arguments have been unreliable and he's turned into a broken record. If the domestic fans were always talking the same shit he wouldn't like it either, but at least you can rely on him to never stop. To sum it up 1115 sucks along with all the other import humpers.

Seems reasonable. Toyoda has been selling their vehicles for MUCH more than they spend making them so they can maximize profits. GM is simply trying to earn any profits so it's fine.

OK, so the UAW union just alleviated most of their healthcare and retirement costs. Essentially saving them thousands on the sale of a vehicle, making them very much competitive with foreign manufacturers. So they got a taste and they want a little more, right?
I can't really be to shocked because it seemed to me like every new model year the cost of a car goes up. Regardless of manufacturer.

No GM is not the devil but they have cars that are unreliable with poor track records
If Honda and Toyota raise thier prices then I wouldnt like it either but at least you can rely on the product.
GM sucks along with the other domestic auto makers

So without that UAW deal they'd have to raise 1.5% plus $2,000?

I'll be interested to see how all the domestic haters take this. I'm sure if toyota or honda announced this it would just blow away unnoticed. However, with a domestic making a price increase I'm sure they will be made out to be the devil of the automotive industry

If they could get rid of the UAW they could subtract at least that much from every vehicle, if not more.
