General Motors will revamp its Duramax V8 engine to meet new diesel emission rules for the 2007 model year, reports Automotive News. GM will give the powerplant a new variable geometry turbocharger, enhanced exhaust gas recirculation, a closed crankcase ventilation system, and an oxidizing catalytic converter to bring it up to standards. The report indicates the changes could add at least $3,000 to the cost of building the truck.

It would be a waste just to fit this engine on to pickups. This engine will be a nice addition to the mainstream large GM suvs. Id say fit it in on more models. Still 3K seems lower than developing a full hybrid.

Mike, your ignorance of European diesel technology is utterly electrifying. Did you commandeer your parent’s Windows 95 machine or did you sneak access from summer camp?
