GM to reverse closing decision on at least 30 dealerships

06/10/2009, 4:15 PM

By Andrew Ganz

Though it was just a month ago that General Motors sent termination letters to more than 1,100 of its about 6,000 dealerships in the United States, the automaker has decided to reverse its decision on at least 30 of those it intended to close. Nearly half of those to-be-terminated dealers have submitted data-based pleas to the Detroit automaker.

GM set up a system to allow dealers whose franchise agreements were not set to be renewed to present the automaker with data defending a closure reversal, reports Automotive News.

Of the more than 500 requests it has reviewed, the automaker has decided to grant at least 30 of those an extension of their franchise agreements, rather than forcing them to close.

Though Chrysler won its decision to close nearly 800 of its dealers, GM is taking a much more cautious tactic.

This is a fair way to give the closing dealers a shot at staying open. I like at least they are trying to hear them out, unlike Chrysler.

There’s a long-time Buick dealer in Redlands, CA that has made the local Los Angeles news thanks to hundreds of customer testimonials trying to help the family keep the dealership.. hopefully that is one of the franchises that GM is reconsidering.

In looking at the article it says Hatfield is a very important part of their community. Duh. Pretty much every dealership is important. Perhaps buyers should start supporting the ones they want to stay.

Can they back track about 30 years more and never green light the Chevette?

I apologize in advance for opening up the can of worms.

Don’t worry Johnny. Now that the government is involved the essence and quality of the Chevette will be alive and well at Marxist Motors. I can smell the worms now.

Oh the Chevette, such a horrible car – but the name is really good. The G8 replacement?

The truely sad part is that the Chevette is still a better looker than the Aveo5 – you know you can’t deny that!
