GM to sell Chevrolet Beat in the U.S.?

01/08/2009, 11:31 AM

By Drew Johnson

Although the Chevrolet Beat concept made its debut a couple of years ago at the New York Auto Show, General Motors has stated on several occasions that the diminutive hatchback is not coming stateside. However, the Detroit automaker may have had a change of heart as an updated version of the Beat will make an appearance at the Detroit show.

On Thursday’s “Today Show” on NBC, GM design chief Ed Welburn revealed that an updated version of the Chevy Beat will be highlighting the automaker’s Detroit show lineup. Welburned stopped short of saying the Beat will be coming to the North American market, but he did say the hatch would be “very affordable”, indicating it could be part of GM’s U.S. plans.

GM chairman Bob Lutz stated last year that the Beat would not be coming to the U.S. because it was not designed to pass U.S. crash regulations, but it’s possible that $4 gas swayed GM to re-engineer the Beat to pass more stringent crash regulations. If the Beat does make it to the U.S. market, it would likely boast 40+ mpg fuel mileage ratings.

Welburn also revealed part of the Beat’s front end, showing a car that looks in line with the rest of Chevy’s U.S. lineup. We expect to hear plenty more on the Beat during the Detroit auto show, so check back for more details after the show kicks off on January 11th.

Imagine if the government was as hard on the airline industry as it is with the auto industry. Planes would be grounded as we speak.

RE: rds130
I agree and think all current Chevy grilles look ridiculous and personally, are deal-breakers for me. There are basic design principles of balance and clean lines that seemed to be completely disregarded and Chevy decides to put these grilles (or a version thereof) on every single model? I know it’s different for every consumer, but design is a very important factor for me and I think current Chevy’s look cheap with those grills.

… and most of you probably gush over the front end of an Audi like it was some piece of art. In both cases however, the smaller the car the dumber the grill looks.

If GM brings this to the states, it will be destroying Hondas last piece of the automotive market. The Fit is already an overrated piece of sh1t, (the media will never admit that the Aveo is superior in quality and reliability) and if GM comes to good terms with a brand new segment leader, yet again, they will kill Honda for good. Everything else they build is already superior to any Honda POS on the market.

I don’t know guys. When I saw it at the NAIAS couple years ago I was hoping that they would make it. It’s an aggressive looking hatchback. Much like the FIt, xD, and new Fiesta. If you don’t like because it’s a Chevy, then look beyond the bow-tie emblem on it. Come on, this thing is better than what they currently have out.

I didn’t think I’d ever consider buying American, but I’ve more and more impressed with what has been coming out from GM and Ford (nothing from Chrysler yet though).

Would you rather drive this or the Aveo?

RE: Need more oil for GM
“the media will never admit that the Aveo is superior in quality and reliability” -Are you even serious? The The Daewoo Kalos (rebranded by Chevy as Aveo in the US) scored far lower in the independent Consumer Reports than the Honda FIt. -It is nowhere near the car that the fit is in quality and most of all owner-submitted feedback. It also has nowhere near the cargo space or seat configuration/stow-away options. Your comments are laughable.

for 4 billion in bailout money they better bring the beat, im tired of american automakers giving better offerings across sees and not to their own country as ford does with the fpv line and the feista that will be “new” in 2010…. maybe.

Need More Oil – so, IF GM pulls their heads out of their asses and makes a decision that was already a no-brainer to begin with, and the Beat does well, it will sway Honda buyers into buying cars other than the Beat that they aready didn’t want in the first place? You’re right. That makes perfect sense. Watch out Honda! GM is gunning for you!

I happen to like the new Chevy grille. It beat the hell out of that monstrosity they slapped on the front of the 2004-05 Malibu.

I, too, look forward to the Beat, even though I voted for the Trax. I still fail to understand why GM had a few hundred thousand people from America voting on their favorite of the 3 concepts, when they didn’t have plans to sell any of them here. I’m glad that signs show they’re having a change of heart.

And even though the Fit is a better car overall, the Aveo has lots to offer the segment:

1) Great warranty
2) Great interior (for its class)
3) Great new engine with better fuel economy than the Fit
4) Much lower price than the Fit.

Last I checked, in the smallest, cheapest segment of the American market, those 4 things still mattered quite a bit. That might be why the Aveo is the best-selling car in that class.

Uh, I believe Chevy was the one who had designed that grill and it has it’s name and bowtie on it, making them responsible for the horrific grill, I don’t car where it’s made.

#1: Not pass crash regulations?
GM built it’s business on vehicles that couldn’t pass crash regulations
We all ASSUMED that already!

#2: Typical GM misstep. When the buzz is hot, and gas prices are high, don’t bring the desired product.
When your’e wallowing in your own excrement, and gas is free, here comes smart, efficient product!
