It seems earlier rumors were half-right, as GM will show off a near production-ready version of its Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid to employees as part of its 100th anniversary celebrations this September. The Volt is expected to make its public unveiling either at the Los Angeles International Auto Show this November or Detroit in January.
The company’s actual ‘birthday’ falls on September 16th, 2008, though it’s not known exactly when or where the automaker will strut the hybrid in front of its employees. For security reasons, no cameras or cell phones thus equipped, will be allowed into the exclusive unveiling.
The Volt is to be built at the company’s new Hamtramck plant in Michigan, says a Detroit News report. Its 1.4-liter gasoline engine, meant to act as a generator to charge the batteries, will be built at a new 530,000 square foot plant in Flint. The direct-injected and turbocharged engines will also power the Chevrolet Cruze compact car, which will replace the Cobalt.
A Flint City Council meeting set to take place on August 25 will consider granting tax incentives for the plant.
